Island medal badge question

So you have to get like 5,000 island medals to get the gold medalist badge but does the badge have the same logic as the bell saver badge where you have to have a total of 5,000 medals all at the same time or is it just the total number of medals you've received?

For Gold Medalist (island medals) you'll need to have collected a total of 5.000 medals over time. You don't need to have 5.000 in your bag. You can spend them and still get the badges.

For Bell Saver you need to have the total amount of bells on your character/bank account.
