Besides using an amiibo? Or is it just ignoring the specific villager each day for a couple of days enough to get him to leave?

TBH the villagers I talk to the most always tend to have the thought bubble.
I'm at a point where I think it's just totally random.

Especially considering you can TT back a day, and then forward to the day someone had a thought bubble, and it will transfer to someone else. Essentially re-rolling that RNG.

So for someone who does't TT...?
It's just a waiting game.

I've also heard the villager you most recently had move in won't ask to leave.

I've been wondering this too, Idk if this is because I was tt but I talked to piper until she had to black squiggle and she wanted to leave my town afterwards.

For some reason, my favorite villagers (the ones I talked to and gifted the most) were the first ones that asked to leave. I think ignoring the villager might not be the best strategy but I also think whichever villager wants to move out is influenced by RNG. TTing is definitely a quick way to move villagers out (I was able to move two out last night in about 2 hours) but if you are not looking to TT, you might have to wait ~2 weeks till a villager wants to move out.

Didn't I read here or somewhere that the villagers that you interact the most is likely the one that is going to be asking you to leave? Unsure if that was a rumor but...

I saw this guide: Make sure you DON'T talk to the villager you want to leave. Ninji found that ignoring them helps make them leave. Talk to them only when the thought bubble appears.

I won't risk time traveling, I never did it in new leaf either, so I guess I will play the waiting game and then try out the method above.

Thanks for the answers all

Do you have a source on this? I'm very interested in how this mechanic works, I didn't know Ninji had commented on it.

Well, this method seems to be the fastest : https://www.belltreeforums.com/threads/how-to-reset-which-villager-is-moving.510949/
You don't have to time travel, I don't, and it still worked. You just have to wait until someone wants to move out and then it should only take a few days for you to be able to say goodbye to the islander you want gone.

totally agree with this! it's an assured method and will at least switch between the RNG picks, even if you sometimes get dupes.
