Is it possible to trade villagers?

Me and a friend want to trade villagers who are both in boxes atm, is it possible to get them to our island when they’re both in boxes?
We went to each others islands and talked to them but they were “rejected” by resident services...
Is Trading villagers this way even possible?

I am pretty sure it's not You need to have the plot be standing actually empty

Nope, they can't both be in boxes unless you have a middleman of some sort.
