I can’t figure out how to talk to everyone

There is a specific icon on your phone app for your character. You pull your phone and type. It is on the second screen of your character’s phone.

I would love some help please, I started my island when the game was released but I was in a horrific car accident, the SUV caught fire and as we were moving house, we lost everything. I have got a new Switch to play in hospital but I lost my island and I have to start again. It was a hard copy game but I thought the cloud save would transfer and it didn't... . Any help would be really appreciated.
