Do whatever floats your boat man.
My mayor character is male, but I dress him in dresses sometimes because the dresses are cute so hey why not. I also regret using a male character in pok?mon because the girl has way better clothing choices. But in acnl it doesn't really matter what gender you pick, anyway? Ultimately, the only difference it makes is what eyes you have, what color your town ID is, and what color your pajamas are in dreams.
The clothes are unisex, the hair is unisex, whatever. And even in games where it does make a difference (like pok?mon), it's a game, it's meant to be fun. If you want to play a boy character, good for you, if you want to play a girl character, good for you. Do what you find fun. Be creative. It's a game!
And because WonderK mentioned something like that, I don't actually think it's creepy if you pass for a gender you're not. It's… not important? I dunno I feel like it's not important. I've had people call me by either him or her and I don't correct them because I don't care/don't see why it's important.
+ it's funny seeing how some people will treat you differently depending on what gender they assume you are
