like when people are like 'i speak japanese, "KO NEE CHEE WA! HAHAHAHA" (ik its not spelled like that obv)

One time I met a Spanish girl in college who told me she could speak very well in Spanish. So one day, me and her got put into a group together and the rest of the group did not speak Spanish, so I would tell her in Spanish how much I disliked the group of people we had to do this project with. She never spoke a word back to me so after class she asked me to repeat everything I had said to her in English. When I asked her why did she tell me she spoke Spanish but she didn't she replied with "oh but all my grandmother says to me is good morning, goodnight and basic words in Spanish. I didn't think it would be so hard"

Lolwut

"DESUU

SAYONARA
ARIGATOU
ICH-NI-SAN"

(also, I am no expert in Japanese, I'm just copying what they said)

It's actually really hard to get fluent in a language, a lot harder than even schools make it out to be. In linguistic social studies there are usually two approaches to what "fluent" actually means:

1. You actually know the language just as good as your native one.
2. You understand the language well enough to speak it without difficulties and understand everything a native speaker says, even when the person mumbles/speak fast and so on.

The first one is more harsh, and has to do with what happens in your brain when you speak (I'm not gonna go into that too much though)

It is almost impossible to be fluent with just studying, speech and being surrounded by the language a lot is a big part of it and you'll probably will have to live in a country where the language is spoken for a while to be completely fluent if it's not a so called lingua franca in the area where you live (like English is in many countries).

My favorite rule of thumb is that when you understand puns in the language just as well as a native speaker, you are probably fluent.

It doesn't bother me at all. You guys are overthinking it way too much lol.

I don't really mind. You guys are taking it way too seriously.
It's just what they say to make themselves feel better.

Well, it's one of my areas that I'm researching in right now. If I wouldn't over think it, I wouldn't be much of a linguist.

(I'm not actually bothered by it)

I actually thought your post was pretty interesting.

What I meant by it is that they might be overthinking and misinterpreting what usually would have been a joke. I tell people that I can speak Indonesian and then throw out a couple of words I remember from primary school for fun. I did french for two years and can only remember how to say cat yet I will swear to my grave that I can speak the language (who said I was fluent hah).

I understand where you guys are coming from. I myself am one of the people who says I can speak a language without really being able to. I can't actually speak much Spanish, but I do know enough that if I'm helping a Spanish-speaking customer at work, I can sort of understand what they need.

I hate it when people use broken Japanese in sentences. It's something I just cannot stand, especially when most of the time they're using words like 'kawaii' or 'desu' to sound cute, when actually it makes then sound the complete opposite. This goes for any language really. It just makes it seem like they have no respect for the language itself.
If you're actually bothering to learn the language properly, then I think it's okay to use words in the language to practice pronunciation ect, but doing it to act cute is just...

Haha, I see x3 Yeah, it's not a thing to take very seriously, even if people are serious when are thinking that they know a language when they only know a few words. It's not like they are trying to trick anyone, it's just lack of knowledge or something similar.

Ughh, some stupid boys in my year say that they have a 'secret' language. But I doubt they even know what there talking about xD

I only use it for fun and to mock **** but otherwise I kinda agree.

This. They said they can speak a different language, they never said how much they can speak it

you forgot KA KO IIII, lol
but man, i hate weebos.

i especially hate it when people say these things and they don't pronounce it correctly. it hurts.

I more hate when people learn 1 or 2 words from movie or anime and try to fit and use the words in every single sentences like they were very good in it!

I don't mind it at all. I can see how it's a little annoying, if the person has other annoying qualities.
But if someone is trying to learn a language, then they need to incorporate words into every day usage. You can't learn without practicing.

I'll be the first to admit that after YEARRRRRS of studying French and Spanish, I still read at a 1st grade level, and couldn't ask for help even if my life depended on it in either language.
