When I joined the forums back in ACNL, I thought this forum was going to be a very busy website for trading, visiting and offer services. I'm not saying it wasn't but as I joined in 2018, most of the New Leaf hype was dead and many people had already quit that game. However, as New Horizons came out, this forum gain a lot of popularity again and it became the busy place it was before around 2013-2014. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play online or use online features as I don't have Nintendo Switch Online, and probably won't get it until later.

With New Horizons, many features and things have been implemented that would seem impossible to me in New Leaf like trading fish and bugs. Also, many interesting websites have been invented like https://nookazon.com which is a site where people put things on sale like on Amazon. They sell not only furniture, but clothes, villagers, materials, DIYs, flowers and fruits as well. Or https://turnip.exchange where people share their turnip prices (many people have negative opinions on this one because of how much the hosts charge you sometimes to allow you into their islands).

This game encourages online playing to the point that to get certain flowers or furniture colors, you must trade them with someone. I feel disappointed that even certain features like QR Codes require Nintendo Switch Online. Also, I've never seen the forums so busy with so many people trading, offering services, selling clothes, furniture or villagers, sharing their turnip prices, or simply visiting each other to play together, which kinda makes me feel I'm falling behind everyone else. Anyone feel the same?

I can understand you feeling that way, but this game is so chill and laid back that your character can be in a tent with 3 villagers and you would still not be behind. Because that's just the mechanics. Sure online features are great but they shoudln't make you feel like you're lagging. So many people here offer buy ins to their family plan I am sure you can get someone to help you out of you really need it.

I think you are not missing that much. In my opinion ,you just save yourself from ugliness. My truly happy online time is not on this forum, neither on discord, is with real life friends who also have the game and we have chill playing sessions.

Here on forum on discord is all about business. It's a very dry place in trading business when you gotta watch your back to not be overcharged.

If you truly want a rewarding online play, look for small groups that just want to take it easy with the game.

Other than not having the alternative colors for the Nook Miles furniture, and the other fruits/flowers, I don't feel like I'm behind everyone else. I don't TT and am enjoying trying to collect as much as I can by myself. I'll eventually get an online account, but the things I want/need shouldn't be too hard to get whenever I'm ready. I'm not worried about it.

I think it might be because everyone is so focused on actually building their island (like myself)! I want to create a fun island for visitors so I have been so stuck in trades. This is because I want people to come to my island and hang out on a finished seaside paradise!

I think once everyone is settled and enjoying their island, multiplayer relaxing will be more popular <3

This is less a problem with NH and more a problem with Nintendo itself. Nintendo has always been bass-ackwards when it comes to online functionality and sadly with the Switch, they're still far behind. Unless you have IRL friends to play with you're not missing much outside the business end.

The island tours and easy touch screen chatting in New Leaf really spoiled me. Theres literally nothing to do now other than risk your flowers being trampled on. Too bad we can’t go on NMT islands while playing online,

Even if we could... Why bother? Hostile bugs don't spawn online so you can't even make a tarantula island together. I don't see having fun with my friends piling on a plane and going to a Nook Mile island just to... What? Chop some trees down?

They wanted to hop on that gravy boat Microsoft and Sony have been riding for years... thing is, subscription-based content is far more scummy when marketed towards Nintendo's largely underage playerbase.

I think Nintendo has made a bad call here.

New Horizons is super multiplayer heavy in its own way... I mean if you want more then your native fruit, sister fruit, and coconuts you’ll need to trade someone, same with your native flower, sister flower, and a third type of flower.
Nook miles colour variations aren’t technically needed, but those of course need multiplayer of some kind to trade as well... it’s frustrating if you have no one to play with locally and no ability to get an online subscription. You can’t even use QR code’s without an online subscription, which in my opinion is pretty dumb.
People without a subscription definitely aren’t behind in any way, but it definitely seems like Nintendo is more interested in making money through an online subscription than they are in making sure everyone can enjoy their games to the fullest

you're not missing much but that depends on a person. i don't have internet so i use my hotspot when trading. so far that's what i use it for.

nookazon is great but i hate contacting people. discord can never find anyone and you have to friend them. also those that I've contacted never replied back so basically trash. the only people i contact is those that post their link on the actual discord.

i do think it’s shady to lock such an important function behind a paid subscription but i also think it’s a pretty cheap subscription. $40 for a whole year is not even $4 a month and you can get cards for smaller time increments if you don’t need or don’t want to pay for a whole year. i think it sucks you have to pay for it but it’s pretty accessible despite that?

Same. I want to get my amiibo card villager in the game, but he asks for a recipe that requires a flower that's not available to me.

I have NSO and don’t do much trading. I’m kinda just collecting things as I shop around my town and others. The only things I actively search for are specific colors of Nook Mile Items.

I feel the trading aspect of this game is kind of extreme. I also don’t care for the obsession over NMT.

I like collecting things at my own pace, makes the experience more enjoyable and less of a chore. And I consider myself a completionist, lol. But with all the color options available in this game, I can’t be bothered with actively completing the catalog.

Right now there is a lot of hype and people are scrambling to get resources, items, villagers, etc. Eventually I think everything will go back to normal and be more chill. I do hate that so much trading is required in this game though as I prefer to play more on my own. Like why do I not have every type of flower available to me in my store even if it has to rotate daily? That's so annoying to me. Same with different colored items and Nook Miles items. I really wish that stuff all rotated.

That's a large reason I haven't bothered to get an online subscription yet. I'm waiting for the online economy to stop being so ridiculous. By then, there might be more things to trade for too. So far we haven't had any region-specific DLC or holidays like we did in NL.

Flowers rotate throughout the season. Today I got Hyacinth and its not my original 4 flowers. So you will get all the flowers (its not lock like fruit trees are).

$19.99 for a year if you only need a single account.

Nintendo's online service is so cheap that it's really hard to accept complaints about it. And it isn't neccessary to have online play to play NH. All it really does is speed up the rates at which you will aquire things.

i honestly wouldnt even bother with nintendo switch online if it werent for trading, there's basically nothing to do in online multiplayer for NH except run around and spin your pretty umbrella lol
