Hi friends, it?s been an incredibly long time since I?ve logged onto the bell tree, let alone even played animal crossing new leaf *cries a bit*.
Life has taken a toll on me in the past year & I?ve been incredibly depressed & just in general, all over the place.
But that?s not the point of this post.

I started thinking about my animal crossing new leaf town the other day, about how it?s literally the exact way I wanted it to be. I have all of my favorite villagers, I have an immense amount of rare items & a LOT of sets. I have all the fruit, my museum is pretty dang full too.

But, I can?t help hating everything about it. I hate how I relied so heavily on cycling out villagers to get the ones I wanted. I hate how I did so many in game trades for special items. I feel like I cheated the game, if that makes any sense? Instead of just playing to play, like I used to with my prior town I had in 2016, I played frantically & obsessively to get the things I wanted, even doing scary time travel jumps & messing certain things up. I miss playing just to play, and being excited to open up my DS daily to see what new things awaited me.
I guess the point of this post is to ask, should I just delete my entire town? Start over from scratch? Try things a new way & just let the game be how it?s supposed to be, even if I end up with villagers I dislike & it takes an incredibly long time? Granted, my nintendo switch gets a lot of attention from me (and sidenote: I am so excited for New Horizons!) but, I guess I just miss New Leaf incredibly but I can?t bear to play in a town I feel like I cheated to get.

I know a lot of people cycle & do what they want to do to get villagers & items etc, no shame on you if you do so! This isn?t a ?oh you?re a bad player if you do these things? post, but for me, I feel so wrong about the things I did to get where I am.

I think if I close everything down, I will be making a post on one of the forum sites here to get rid of all my items, either for free, or for very very very cheap. If you?re interested in something like that, let me know. I think I?m going to open my town for the first time in like.... 9 months & take inventory of the things I have.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I get how you feel! I played for about 1 year and did most things in my town naturally before discovering this site and doing trades. I always wonder what my town would have turned into, though, if I had just let it run it?s course. I decided to really alter my town layout and fill it with hybrids, but now I do really miss when it was natural - way less maintenance, plus the game already looks pretty the way it is!
I?ve been feeling the need for change and have been contemplating this too, but my problem is that I know that most of the things I attained is my current town I did work really hard for and I don?t want to lose them or the villagers I love.

Have you ever thought about buying a second copy of the game - digital or cartridge - and starting from there, but without allowing trades or anything on that town? That?s what I decided to do, so that I won?t lose anything I love about my first town, but I can also start anew and do everything in a new way.

Game cartridges are pretty cheap nowadays! I got my second one off eBay for about $20 USD

If that isn?t an option though, sometimes resetting your town is the fresh start you need :) personally I know I?d be frustrated going through all the dialogues again, but really it isn?t that bad. Plus you get to choose a new layout and everything!

I keep wondering how my town would’ve turned out too, if I had just let it run its course. And in a lot of ways I’m frustrated because I know with the 16 villager cycle it’ll take a loong time for me to get my favorite villagers back, but at least that would add an exciting element to playing every day again.
I will mainly miss Eric the most, he’s probably my favorite villager of all time. But, I guess at least I have him in Pocket Camp!
I thought about buying a second game cartridge but I think it may just be better for me to reset at this point.
At least the incentive of having to work to get where I was will probably push me to keep playing the game, because I feel if I ever bought a second cartridge I just would never touch my current one ever again. I’m going to certainly miss the setup I have inside my house & my villager set up but at least I may feel worthy of the game again? Who knows.
Thank you so much for your input, it really means a lot to me :D

Hello! I've grown tired of the game a few times, and the best way to get over this is to reset it. You may not want to reset your game, though, since one day you may want to view your original town but be unable to. Like previously said in this thread, cartridges are pretty cheap on ebay. If you can easily afford it, it's worth it to buy another cartridge, just so you don't lose your old town. If you don't care that much, though, or are strapped for cash, resetting it won't be that bad. Everything in life is temporary, anyways!

As for your stuff, selling all of it for forum currency would be a bit of work, in order to catalogue, price, and distribute all of it. If I were you, I'd give away most of it for free, selling exclusive and event items.

Do you know what I would do? I would upload the current town to the Dream Suite and then delete it. That way you can still visit it when you want to, but you don't have to play in a town that you feel like you cheated in.

I think you raised some fair points, and I think it's good that you recognize what makes you feel like you don't want to play in that town anymore. If you're still unsure that deleting it is the right thing to do right away, I would suggest just creating a new character and moving into that town. That way, you get to experience being a new player in an environment you built and enjoyed at one time. It might also bring new perspective, but mostly, it should help you really make up your mind.

If you do decide to start over, it would definitely be such a waste to just delete everything. Personally, and I'm not saying you have to do this, I would give away the stuff or trade for TBT in the forum. If you do decide to do that, it would be nice if you let me know, I'm always interested in cataloging furniture and various bits and bobs. (Especially Alpine, Mermaid or Zen series)

Whatever you do decide to do, remember that this is just a game and everyone plays it the way they want. If you're not having fun, it's always good to ask yourself why and to make adjustments. I find that you get to avoid becoming too frustrated or burned out on things this way.

I hope some of this was helpful darlin, good luck! <3

awh im sorry you feel that way! ive also had lots going on irl that ii stopped playing, except ii only lasted a week lol, ii felt responsible for keeping my villagers happy especially since ii was taking the time to get my town how ii wanted it.. ive only been playing for a year, bht ii have almost everything, its a huge accomplishment.. yes ii did get items from ppl here, ive traded, ive bought, ii did it all.. bht ii even made new friends!!! ii found ppl who actually care about their town just like ii do! ive said this before bht ii had a friend who played ACNL since it came out, noted ii had no idea what she was talking about ii didnt even have a DS!! so ii finally got one for my bday and got the game and then she totally ditched me!! ii didnt even have the game for no more than 2.5mths!! bht ive learned lots from ppl here as well! ii do understand where youre coming from though, its just the items that ii would say ii 'had help in' bc ii totally did the completing my museum all by myself, planting stuff, making pwps! events!! etc.

bht starting fresh and doing things how youuu feel you should do them is totally okay!! if it makes you happy do what you gotta do!! ii would just say make sure its def. what you want bc as ive been told once you delete your town you cant get it back! you could also get a 2nd game! ii as well thought of that!

if you need help selling your items id be happy to help, ii can come over and take inventory and write a list down of all you have and then you can make a post.. about selling.. you can list it, or make a moribd list so ppl can see the pic of what the item actually is! ill even put it in a,b,c order for you! whether you want to lay it all out on the ground of your town ill sort it for you, that way it would be easier to find stuff when you sell it..

just let me know! whether you decided to sell on your own, or want help :) either way id love to come over amd check out what you have, maybe if you sell for IGB you can put that towards your new town.. it will just be like a garage sale, starting new and fresh bht with money to get you by!! remember its just a game! and you play it whenever youuuu want and however youuuu want!! :) *hugs to you*

i suggest getting a second cartridge. you can easily get a pre-used one online for cheap, of which you can delete the data. that way, you can play with ease, but also go back to your old town for the memories or anything

I definitely agree that you try this, if at all possible. Deleting a save file is a lot like losing an old friend - you may look back at some point in the future and regret having let go of all the memories you made in your town/with your specific set of villagers. Having a secondary option safeguards everything you've built while still giving you the freedom to start fresh again. Best of luck with your decision!

Hey there, I hope you don't mind me jumping in, but I just wanted to comment on how you said you felt like you cheated the game because you used specific techniques, and because you didn't "play just to play." I don't think you're being fair to yourself when you mention this, because Animal Crossing is specifically made to be the sort of game where you get to decide for yourself how you want to play it. There's lots of different ways to go about it, and the way you describe your first go at it is just one of them. The way you're thinking about playing now is another.

One isn't necessarily better than the other, and it's not fair to you to beat yourself up for having played in a way that you're now no longer interested in. Animal Crossing gives you the freedom to play however you like! If that's what you liked the first time around, that's perfectly fine, and it's nothing to feel guilty about now. And it's also fine to not want to play that way anymore, too. There are no wrong answers in this game.

Whether you nuke your town or not, I just hope you won't punish yourself for your old gameplay style anymore. You don't deserve that! Animal Crossing should make you happy, not guilty. You didn't do anything wrong, and no one here judges you for it.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Thank you all so much for the kind words & the insight. I looked through Ebay & cartridges are incredibly cheap right now, so I think I may end up buying another! I’m going to log on today & play in my town & see how it makes me feel, if it leaves me feeling not great, I think I may look into buying another cartridge. I did work really hard for where my museum is currently, and I did work to get the special tools I have. I mainly just feel bad for doing so much cycling to get my favorite villagers, and doing so many online trades for certain items. I do have a friend who is willing to hold onto my fruit collection, and certain items I know I want to keep. I still feel like I should restart in a sense, even though I know it may take me a long & tough time to get where I am now. I feel like I’ve limited myself with villagers as well, instead of giving as many villagers as possible a chance in my towns. I’ve gone through the villager lists online again, and there are so many that now I’ve come to enjoy & would love to have around. I’m not sure where I’m going to go from here, but I can say that everybody’s help means so much to me. Thank you for taking the time to reach out (that goes for all of you) and offer your advice, or even just your kindness. It has given me a lot of insight into the situation, & I’m going to give my current town some time to figure out what the best course of action would be for me. Thank you all!

Honestly, I think you should just buy a new cartridge! I did, and I'm still happy I kept my old town I also felt like I cheated with (cause I DEFINITELY did xD duping royal crowns is cheating for sure lol)

im glad you @ least looked them up! thats a step! how did your game play go? did you feel okay starting it up and being in your town??

thats another thing, it will definitely take time getting stuff, when your 1st town had everything, thats why ii think its best you just get a 2nd game, bc what if you want a golden shovel, for example, and youre gonna be like 'omg ii just had one' now ii have to keep buying shovels for when it breaks each time' or that specific chair in your house, or favorite 'kk slider song that took forever for you to find in the T&T Store' .. ya know? just really consider the 2nd cartridge! ii most definitely wouldnt want you to be even more upset bc you erased your town!! :) ppl are here for you to help and listen when you need to vent :) hagd dear!

*p.s IF you do decide to erase, id love to visit before you do!! :) or even now while youre still debating and ill totally be a friend if you want to adf my fc# and come visit my town too if you want :)

I was super scared of starting a new village, but I enjoy the game just as much (if not probably more) than when I first bought it when I was a lil' 10 year old in like 2013. And don't feel bad about how you play - when I first played it, I would only change time if there was nothing happening or if I was playing late at night after things would be closed, and now I am undeniably a hardcore time traveller (I'm talking from 2012 to 2030 in a day) as my actual gameplay style, sort of using it as its own mechanism to focus on certain areas, like maybe farm fossils as I only have a handful of dino bits to finish that part of my museum, or take part in bug-offs or try to collect certain furniture and work on my house. I actually just cleared about 900-ish weeds as ive been to 2050 a few times in the last few days and so figured I'd give Leif a break.
(I edited because I was getting conflicted mixed messages about whether multiple cartridges = multiple villages on one system)

I feel like I'll end up this way eventually, but I still wouldn't reset my town because I know I would regret that, too, so I'd go with the buying a second copy, digital are cheaper i think and used ones from a reliable seller.

All different kinds of playstyles are good! Some tricks are even intended, like Pok?mon's Masuda method (which totally feels like cheating.) I play (for now) with less trading, etc. just because it stresses me out. Getting another cart is nice because it lets you enjoy both playstyles. I hope things go well for you!

I've been feeling the exact same way recently. I have some hacked and non-hacked towns and though I've loved hacking to get the perfect landscape, I really just want to start fresh, delete all my towns and just have one where i don't hack or time travel. Good luck with whatever you choose!
