Hybrids - Diamond or Sideways pattern

Let's say that: I bought 2 White Roses from Leif.
Should I place them orthogonally or diagonally to have a better chance in obtaining a Purple Rose?
And where should the Fertilizer be buried?

I find diagonal almost always grows a hybrid when put in this pattern:
(X=Flower,O=space,F=Fertilizer)

I find that when you do in sideways this works best:

I guess it's Diamond pattern than. Which is a relief because it's an easy pattern.

I did diagonal (checkerboard) with my white roses. got a purple rose the next day.

"Checkboard pattern" makes such more sense...
