I've only just figured out how to make yours or your opponent's hit-box visible whilst in-battle. I've played well over 5000 battles and I happened to figure it out today when I accidentally turned it on.

You literally just press their character icon on the lower screen...

I know a few people, like me, had completely no idea that this feature even existed.
The visible hit-box is so helpful when fighting against thin characters, like Zero-suit samus, Greninja, Rosalina, Samus etc.

It works w/ 3DS. I'm not sure with the Wii U since there's an option to play without the touch screen.

Saying that it's a hitbox is a bit misleading. I'll leave Wikipedia briefly explaining what it actually is in the context of video games.

What you meant is basically a cursor that tracks where the opponent you want to damage is, and won't display the actual hitboxes. This feature is only implemented on 3DS version because it's hard to see certain characters when the camera is zoomed out too much along with the small resolution of the 3D screen.

No, what I meant is a hitbox...

it's a hit box...................

But it isn't a hitbox. Hitting someone in the corner of the box won't damage them. You have to actually hit THEM, not some box around them.

Nah - and even so, Smash's hitboxes look nothing like that. Take this image taken from Melee..

The yellow hitboxes are the areas where you can actually damage the character - and they're rather well-mapped to the character models themselves! Pretty much giving the result that - if your attack touches their character model, it'll hit.

.. Although, note that a lot of attacks have a little extra "range" beyond the animation (note the red hitboxes in the GIF) - THIS is probably the reason why occasionally you'll see an attack hit when it looks like it shouldn't. This isn't really a problem with most attacks (like Fox's kick here), but some characters can have surprising range on their attacks! (Ganondorf's Up-Tilt comes to mind..)
