How to keep a lost item?

So I remember being able to keep a lost item and being able to put it on the ground and such, but now that option is unavailable to me for whatever reason. I don't want to return the item as I kiiinda wanna use it for town decorating so I was wondering if there was a way to keep it? as I can't currently remember it.

I think when I kept my mitten I just left it in my pocket for a few days and the name of it changed. You can keep petitions in the same way too but I can't remember how long I left it there before it changed

I think you just hold onto them for a day. I have a collection of lost items in my museum lol. I didn't know you could also keep a petition. Now I want one.

Leave it in your pockets and you should be able to do whatever you want in a day

You have to hold it in your inventory for two days, I think. I've held onto lost items in cycling towns before, and I've noticed that, when TT'ing to the very next day, I would still get the prompt to show the item to the villager. But if I went two or more days, it would turn into just a regular item.

Really, the only hard part of trying to hold onto a lost item is accidentally mashing A an triggering the prompt to show the item to a villager. XD
