As the title says.

Step one:
- put two flowers in the open and diagonal to each other as described below. X is a flower, O is an open spot

Step two:
- ONLY water those flowers that you want to get a hybrid from.

Step three:
- Wait a day, grab your hybrids and repeat!

I've grown hundreds of hybrids this way!!!

Here's a video of how to do it:

In the video I only water one set of flowers for time's sake. In game, you can water up to four sets of flowers and pretty much get a hybrid every time off of every set.

This also allows you to pick exactly what hybrids you want to grow each day. If you don't know what pairing of flowers make which hybrid, this is a helpful guide:

Just, ignore his bit about watering all those flowers and using fertilizer: total time kill for no reason. Growing hybrids other ways is no faster and you will have less control over which hybrids grow.

Also: best to have Beautiful town status so all those other un-watered flowers don't die on you.

Even if you have the beautiful ordinance, does watering help male hybrids? Also, where do you like to bury the fertilizer?

So does this work better than the checkerboard pattern? Also, are they saying that it's best to water only ONE set of hybrids you want to grow? For example, I'm trying to breed a set of blue and purple roses, blue Lillie's and pink carnations. For this to be effective, I can only, for example, place two blue roses and ONLY water them that day and leave the rest?

Edit: I see in your post that it does say to only water flowers you want hybrids from, but what if you're breeding many? I guess you just have to take it in turns :P

thanks for this tip, Valerie!

just to confirm, this works with a maximum of 4 sets of flowers you want to breed? so that's 8 flowers you water? and you will get 4 new hybrid flowers each day?

To answer questions
@Violets town: no matter the ordinance you must water to get hybrids. I don't use fertilizer for flowers, only for perfect fruit. But if you are having particular trouble geting a hybrid- say a purple pansy from two orange pansies. You plant the fertizer in a square adjacent to both flowers
@Poppy: way, way better than the checkerboard pattern! You can go for more than one type of hybrid at a time- up to 4 hybrids a day- 5 if you are lucky. These 4 to 5 hybrids can all be the same type or different: doesn't matter. But each breeding pair should be set up as in the original post.

@Woody: yes and no. It will always work for four (unless a pesky villager goes around and waters a bunch) sometimes 5. And by work- you will get a new flower from the breeding pair and it is usually a hybrid, but it may not always be one. And yes: water only 8 flowers (or 10 if you feel lucky).

Yes: The game only generates 4-5 flowers a day. By only watering what you want to sprout- you up your chances of getting the hybrids you want

I wish someone would tell me this earlier. I used to water ALL my flowers. I just found this out like a week ago. And it's working. But I spent months watering all flowers.

Yes! I've been doing this for months and months and thought it was common knowledge until several well meaning visitors watered all my flowers to help me get hybrids :(

After that happened several times, I realized that this might not be common knowledge- Hence this video.

Thanks for the tip Valerie, I liked your video! ^^
I had problems just getting 1 hybrid a day to pop up, even if I was only watering the ones I want to grow. But I was doing them in lines so I'll try this way instead. :)

Only 4 a day? I could've sworn I've gotten way more than that before @-@

I've gotten up to 5 a day. But I always get at least 4.

To make sure I always get the hybrids I want/ need: I usually just go for 4 a day.

I never would have known. Thank you for the tip. I usually just get a few hybrids right beside each other and water them everyday but I don't get 4.. maybe like 1 - 3 the most. I'll definitely try that.

I can confirm that this works well. I watered two of each of the following: purple roses, blue roses, pink carnations and blue pansies and got a hybrid from each the next day. Thanks for the tip!

I knew it! :D

But it'll be pretty risky not watering any of the other hybrids... Btw, is placing fertilizer near a hybrid combination guaranteed to produce a hybrid/other flower?

No, fertilizer just ups the chances of getting a pair of flowers to breed. Even with fertilizer, you aren't guaranteed anything. But I promise that if you do what I said in the original post you will get 4 new flowers every day, and only flowers from the breeding pairs you selected (again, unless a villager waters/ plants flowers).

As to your other hybrids: if you have a beautiful town ordinance that will protect them. If not: someone else suggested just making sure your other hybrids are not where they can breed.

If you like getting random flowers every day and going around to see what has sprung up: then by all means, water all of your flowers! I guess I'm just the kind of person that likes a bit more control over my garden :P
