How to get rid of Fish and Bugs?

Many of my villagers have a couple of fish or bugs in their home. And whilst they repeatedly are putting their furniture (which I gifting them) in Re-tail, ask me to buy it in a conversation, or gift it because I "wanted it", their fish and bugs never seem to leave their house.

How can I get rid of them?

When they ask for new furniture it replaces them sometimes.

I tried that repeatedly but when I gave them a new table (2x2) or a dresser (2x1) they simple replace it and put the bugs back on. I hoped it worked with fish but they always find something else to replace instead of the fish.

It has to be the same size as the fish tank to work right?

Sometimes the villager actually says "I want to replace my *insert bug/fish here* with a similar sized item"

It's frustrating to have to wait that long though

I mail them stuff that matches their tastes and can be places only on top of tables

I don't trust my villagers to put items up in their homes anymore if they are mailed. So I put the items up for sale at Retail and when they come in (I usually save and quit until they do) and then push them towards the item until they ping it and convince them to buy it.
