Since most players use their local time as their DS-time, their game will synchronize to their current day and time. A bad side of this is that you won't be able to experience the final seconds of the countdown in the game.
But let's not make that big a deal out of it, you won't be missing th?t much. The fireworks will continue for several hours and the countdown itself lasts the entire day (the 31st). But I can imagine that many players, like myself, would still like to be logged-in when the final seconds pass by. You can do this if you change your DS-time, and there is a safe way to do this. Changing the time by a few hours won't hurt your game if you follow some simple guidelines.
1. If you switch your DS-time past midnight, make sure the day also changes.
2. NEVER go past the 6AM mark or the game can get messed up.
3. If you put your clock backwards by 2 hours, wait at least 2 hours and 10 minutes before logging back in. The game won't notice a change and will think you only been away for 10 minutes. After logging out to sleep, set your clock to the original time or wait for the next day. Don't pass the 6AM mark.
4. You can always put your clock forward 1 or 2 hours and celebrate your in-game new year before you celebrate the real new year, the game won't mind that. When you log out remember to set your clock backwards to the original time. If you set your clock back 2 hours, don't log in before waiting at least 2 hours or the game will notice a shift in time.
If you can follow that you'll be fine. Happy many New Year's~
