How much can you change about villager house interiors?

I just got my favorite villager Cranston and am crushingly disappointed by how different his house interior looks in this game vs. new leaf.
Does anybody know if I can try to redesign the house interior in any way by gifting Cranston different furniture/wallpapers/floorings?
Any information about this would be so appreciates, thanks.

I tried to give Katt a different wallpaper yesterday. She didn't put it up today. I'm not sure if I should keep trying or if this is a sign you can't influence them to change their wallpaper and carpet.
