I reallyyyy want to give Audie a seashell wreath for her door, but I don't want to talk to her so much that she gets annoyed.

What's your strategy?

It takes about a day or 2 for you to have that option of gifting them something. At least in my case c:
Make sure they aren't sitting as well.

Even when I talk to new villagers once per day, I find I can't gift until day 3 or 4. As someone already mentioned, make sure they aren't doing another activity or you won't get the option to gift.
Currently on Day 3 with Tia but she's sick today >_>

Give her medicine, leave her house, then go back in. At that point, you should be able to speak to her like normal.

I don't recall exactly, but it feels like it was a bit less than a week before I could start gifting my newest villager.

I sent Whitney a Seashell wreath in a welcome letter the day she was moving in. The next afternoon it was on her door. By the third day I was able to give her a daily gift. It may have helped that Felicity (peppy villager) had me deliver Whitney a gift on the second day (apparently they got in an argument about who had better fashion/style ideas).
