I fluctuate on villagers a lot... but when do you know its time to let a villager go? for me theres a lot of different factors, like plot resetting and setting up PWPs to block plot reset spots, the theme and setting beside each house, how a new villager fits in the overall theme and colors and names and look with the other villagers...

how has everyone else decided whether or not to let a villager go in favor of a new villager

I'll let villagers move once I've gotten their pics from them. I don't have any permanent residents or dreamies at the moment.

If their house is in a bad spot and is blocking paths/PWPs then I'll let them go whenever they ask me. If it's a villager I really like then I won't let them go until I get their picture once or twice. I don't have permanent dreamies though because I like to switch things up, when I have the same villagers for too long things in my town start to feel stagnant.

I usually let them go when they ask to (especially those whose house placements are bad) but there are villagers that I still want to see in my town so I make them stay longer. Maybe when I feel like meeting new neighbors--that's when I let go of a villager.

It'd be different if they were super excited about moving, and you telling them they can't would make them sad or something, but they feel bad when they're moving, and talk about how we'll always be friends and stuff like that. How the heck could anyone with a heart not feel even a little bit sad after letting them go?

true, if I let O'hare go and he was the littlest of sad I think I would cry... and I don't know if Drago would make up for it...

I hardly ever let them leave. I get way to attached to them, and the few I did let go were sad that I agreed to let them move. Usually when I ask them to stay they are relieved and happy.
It's really just personal preference. You don't have to let them go at all. Or maybe after you get their picture. Some people like to rotate villagers now and then.

It depends on your town and if such a villager is vital.

My first town, Applewin, has three villagers who were there on Day #01: Jambette, Scoot, and Twiggy. I haven't allowed any of them, whenever stating an intent to move, to go because I am loyal to them. Those three, plus Kidd (who is slotted No. 10 on my on-screen menu list; he was from the Campsite), are a part of my vision for Applewin being a lovely town with some down-to-earth villagers mixed in with some superstars. (Those superstars are ones we find on Bell Tree Forums member Hound00med's list among the top draws.) The more time having gone by the stronger the bond. So, I have used other slots to do some rotating of the cast of villagers in Applewin. (I most recently welcomed Hamlet. That Jock hamster is beautiful. He's cool! Pics are below.)

I won't get into how I have managed other towns; but, I think it's wise to have a various reasons concerning with villagers to keep, and which ones to let go, because it may be a good personal balance for having a town more which feels personal. Personally yours. You get a sense of which villagers should be there. And it also allows you, as you let some villagers move, to branch out and experience some new blood.

In a way?you end up knowing when it's time to make a change.

I'm often ready to just let 'em go if they tell me they wanna move. I don't really get why they act so sad about it when they're the ones that wanted to move, though. except on the day they leave, I guess. then I understand, a little.
but like, if you wanna go, then of course I'll support that decision. unless I love you too much, then you have to stay. like Tammy. she can never leave.
though I recently had an unfortunate incident that resulted in me losing Ricky when I didn't want him to go... ;__;

I actually thought of Hamlet too! i have a pet hamster irl that looks like him to.... my gut is telling me to let O'hare go, but I did just put a bunch of tropical stuff around his house! and I am thinking I want Drago for coloring and theme and stuff....

Since I know how the move-out mechanic works now, I'll only be letting villagers go after I feel like I've gotten to know them well enough, or if they end up just... not "feeling" right. I do most things by my gut feelings so it depends how much I'm loving that particular villager when they ping me. Makes me feel better, though, that I know they don't choose to leave based on a friendship level or anything but rather that it's completely random and not at all influenced by whatever you do.

Right now my town is all dreamies, but I'm waffling back and forth on one of them at the moment. I had a bit of a TT accident and lost both Kidd and Pashmina to it, and I'm definitely not cycling to get them back after how frustrating and annoying it was to do it the first time. I'm not recklessly TTing anymore but if I somehow lose someone again now, whatever, I'll find another villager to fill their place. I may have my dreamies but I can make it work without them if they head out for whatever reason.

Live out your attachment to them and let 'em go when you're done.

You have your good reasons.

My main town, Applewin, is essentially done. Occasional tweaking happens. (It's for welcoming an incoming villager using a fourth human to manipulate the plot-resetting mechanism.) And you can tell with the cast of villagers. There isn't one Cranky or Snooty because, well, the town is 18 months old. (I don't have to have all Villager Personality Categories represented.)

I welcome you to visit it, if you would like, as the Dream Address is listed in the Signature.

People having played a given town will get a good feeling when one is ready to let any particular villager go. And if a villager moves out, perhaps because a player hasn't loaded the game in a while, it's not worth getting too upset when keeping in mind that "Animal Crossing: New Leaf" has dozens and dozens of very appealing villagers.
