How do you feel about custom paths?

With the implementation of proper pathing with ACNH, I was wondering how y'all felt about custom paths. Obviously a staple of most towns in previous versions, I'm always blown away by the creativity of the community.

Personally, I'm super addicted to the footstep sounds of the official paths (the sound engineering in this game is top quality btw) so I was disappointed when I found that after adding some lining to my pre-existing paths, the footsteps go away entirely. I'll probably only use custom paths for small stones and spots to add fake flowers / greenery moving forward

I feel the same way, especially when it rains it sounds like you're walking on soggy carpet LOL

I wish they'd update it, I'm only using them for stone paths, fake mushrooms, fake flowers, and decks

I agree with you about the footstep sounds. It's the main reason I'm mostly sticking to the official paths even though some of the custom ones I've seen are so pretty. I'll probably try to incorporate custom paths a bit here and there though for certain things.

I'm sad the footstep sounds go away with custom paths as well! It still sounds like something, but it's more generic - I guess they made it so it's a sound that works regardless of the texture it is supposed to be. I wish they could at least make it so that a custom path on top of a regular path will retain the sound that would play for the texture underneath.

I have a mix of official and custom paths on my island - mostly custom paths, but I have a small area in town with the terracotta paths. For everywhere else, I use a custom dirt path, stone path, stepping stones, flowers and cream bricks. Wish we had more slots!

I like the paths the games provide us with naturally (I'm obsessed with the arched stone one, I have it all over my town), and I like using other designs to decorate it and other little areas. I do wish we had better sound effects with the custom ones though.

I love custom paths. My island is full of them because I love the texture they add. I do agree though, we would be able to chose what sound corresponds with our custom paths.

i think the custom paths are a fun idea, but the standard ones are just so well done. and i second the thing about the noises

I'm unsure if this is true but I feel like it's correct from just watching my villagers walk aroubs. The villagers tend to choose to walk on the default terraforming paths more VS the custom paths. So I'll probably use the default for my main roads and custom as side designs.

I'm basically going to repeat what everyone is saying. I'm sad that the sound is not....there...or just...generic and it ruins for me. Using a pattern as a road stresses me out that I will kick it. Using fake perspective looks strange to me personally. It's annoying to place the right tiles.

However there are several great desginers in the community and the end result is just amazing! I love to see how people use them in their islands. I enjoy watching island tours and visiting new islands just to see custom stuff. I just don't want to use them as a road or platform myself. Only for details.

I use custom designs to add trim to the regular pathing. Most of the custom paths I've found just lack enough fine detail to look realistic. It's harder to make a 32x32 grid look natural like the ones we're provided. It's a shame that we can't change the sound either.

In NL, I tended to prefer natural dirt-worn paths, although I loved looking at pictures of what people did with patterns.

In NH, I do have a couple of areas with permitted paths, but it's still limited. If I find something I really love, that fits my island, I might use it here and there, where they wouldn't be walked on (almost hidden things that you glimpse through the trees).

I never thought about that! That's cool.

This is similar to what I tried to do with my brick paths since I didn't like how the path integrated into the grass surrounding it, but since my paths are just 2 squares wide it took away all the sound and ultimately I decided to kick them off.

The sound doesn't really bother me. Although I do miss the click-clack of walking on stone and terracotta, I really like the blending effect they've given designs (although occasionally it doesn't work like with an elaborate design) and I think custom paths look absolutely stunning. They really give islands the ability to be totally unique.

I thought I would stick with my custom paths but after I kicked up my path for the hundredth time I decided I'm just going to use the official ones.
Plus I agree, the sound they make is really nice! Love the stone and wood ones.

This is the most frustrating part for me. It doesn't even make sense! At least make it so you only kick it when you have the design tool out, not all the time!

i love custom paths, but i never really understood how to use them around my island/town and make it look pretty... i'm actually desperately looking for some help with that lol

Right! I was hoping when I unlocked terraforming the pathing tool with the custom path option would prevent this... but nope. It really got on my nerves lol, I stopped maintaining them after a while and there was just holes in my path everywhere :P
