How do you breed hybrids? :)

So I can finally seriously decorate my town! I am looking to breed hybrids from now on. I was wondering, if I only want a certain color (pink and purple to be precise), how do I go about breeding it in a most efficient way? I usually just start by placing down default colors next to each other (or at least a combo that makes pink for example) and then water it everyday and just let it get outta control and just pick the pink ones o_o

What I do is have them diagonal. I never put whites next to yellows.
