Am I doing something wrong? Do I really need to keep fishing all day at the island to make any decent money? Please advise!! Thank you.

You can sell fruit for quite a bit in Re-Tail.
Put five to nine pieces of fruit together and go into Re-Tail, put them up for sale, and your villagers will buy them for 9999 bells. That's the max you can sell an item for. (Other town's fruit, foreign fruit sells for that amount per batch of five to nine.)
Go to Tortimer island (offline) early in the morning. Around 5 or 6.00 am, and catch the expensive beetles, sharks and fish.
Make sure you have some trees planted on the island.
You can get fruit to plant, including palm fruits from the island tours.
I used to make around 500,000 bells a morning doing a couple of trips.
If you aren't able to go to the island yet, just sell fruit, bugs and fish.
Write to your villagers and they'll sometimes send you foreign fruit.

Honestly there are a lot of friendly people on here that would likely be willing to help you out with making money!! But if you wanna do it the old fashioned way without anyone giving you bells, your best bet is to take advantage of catching sharks/beetles at the island and then using the bank's interest system to your advantage.

I earn money by going to the island in the evening (after 6pm) and catching sharks and the expensive palm tree beetles. I can spend just 30 minutes on the island and fill up my basket. I earn anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 bells in that short time. If you spend longer and give yourself a cut-off, like not taking any beetles worth less than 8,000 home, then you can earn a lot more.
You can also assess your fossils and sell them to Re-Tail, find and hit the money rock daily, and sell perfect fruit in another town that has them on premium that day. I always deposit my excess money in the ABD so at the end of each month, I earn the max interest of 99,999 bells, too.

As said above, it's not too difficult to make money in New Leaf.
Simply go to your Island around 6 P.M. and catch the beetles on the palm trees. Keep your eye out for some sharks, too. You can easily make 1,000,000 bells in one sitting with some patience.
If you want to make money without going to the island, these are some other helpful ways:
1. Grow an orchard of perfect fruit trees. Selling the fruit adds up big time- just leave sure you keep some trees alone, as perfect fruit trees can die, and you will need to replant.
2. Sell fossils you have assessed.
3. Hit the money rock daily for bells and ore. Ore can fetch high prices, but it's rarer.
4. Save your earnings in the bank for interest!
5. Have you saved up Meow Coupons? Remember, you can exchange these at the post office ABD for bells- 3,000 a ticket.

I’m super lazy so I just scan in my amiibo everyday and after I’ve amassed a lot I exchange them for monies. I time travel a lot though, so I get a lot of scans in. That or I sell my perfect fruit and bamboo shoots after I collect several baskets.

You can get turnips from Joan on Sundays to get a bell profit from them though if I'm remembering right it depends on the day? You can also dig up fossils and ones already in the museum can get sold for good bells as well, beetle-catching is always a good way as well. Also getting perfect fruit trees and growing the fruit to sell nets you good bells too, just make sure you save one to grow because the trees wilt!
I used to exchange tbt for bells. I also earned a bunch of bells from giveaways and hacked towns who offered free services to many users. They would have a section in the town where you can snag bells but obviously be considerate to others who might come by.
You can make a 1m a day by catching bugs and sharks after 6pm on Mortimer Island. Sometimes I let some in the basket until they get on the premium list of the day, like sharks, that way I get the double for them, you can also sell them in another town if you follow "what is on your premium list" thread.
Turnips are also a good way to make money (or lose money), buy them when they are less than 100 bells and sell them when you get a good price. Same here, you can sell them in another town if you follow the turnip thread. In case that you can't get a good price and you are about to either lose them or lose money, you can transfer them in another town and get them back after Sunday morning.
You can also make a little bit of money with coupons, I think it's 3k for each coupon, if you don't need them just exchange them for money at the ADB.
You can also make money on the forum by selling stuff on the forum, however most of people here already have everything, what still sell would be bushes, clovers, hybrids, perfect fruits, stuff harder to get, WA items. Take a look at the retail section.
Lastly, you can always trade your TBT bells and collectibles for in game bells.

Thanks for your response! I am going to try selling at retail. I didn't think the villagers would buy items for that high.
I used to go to the island every night from 7pm to 8pm and catch the bugs on the Palm trees and sharks and made nearly 500k a night. You can also make more if you sell your perfect fruit in some else?s town if that isn?t their native fruit.

Fishing is one of the slowest way to earn a lot of bells (in my opinion), unless you're snagging nothing but sharks, and even then it's pretty rare to encounter a shark worth 15,000 bells. The fastest way to earn bells in New Leaf (once you've unlocked Tortimer's island), is to visit the island around 7pm (to ensure you won't encounter any locust which minimizes the chances of finding rare beetles), cut down every tree, bush and flower, leaving nothing more than palm trees and then walking around the island until a beetle spawns. I think the ones worth the most bells were both Hercules beetle and Golden beetle. If you happen to see any shark fins while circling your island, then you can the opportunity to fish for them, otherwise, don't make it your main goal and stick to beetles to speed up the process.
You can also sell your perfect fruit in a friend's town to maximize the profit (assuming you don't share the same fruit).

well, there are a few different ways to go on about making bells.
i usually go to the island, and ONLY catch bugs. no fish, because they aren't worth as much and take up fish. (unless they are sharks, not including the sunfish.)
to prepare the island, i cut down all the regular trees in the middle, destroy all flowers, dig up stumps, and bushes.
you do not want any other bug other than the beetles you're catching on palm trees to spawn: to scare them away (roaches, tiger beetles, hermit crabs)
after that, go around and catch some bugs!
another way is to just purchase bells from people on the forums using tbt, like others have also said. i've seen most people do it in their shops for 1 tbt for 200k. seems reasonable.

Last week my main town had perfect oranges at premium. Main town fruit is perfect apples.
My other town sold sixteen perfect orange baskets and got 864,000.
Early morning and evening bug hunting on the island makes a lot of bells and no risk.
Buy turnips for under 97 bells. I never buy turnips when it's 100 plus. Too much of a risk.
Check the online train station section on this board to see if any players have high sell prices for turnips.
Some players leave their town stuck on the same day when they have high 500 plus sell prices.

the absolute fastest way to be rich is through turnips and the stalk market. I made like 100 million on here a few years ago when people were super active and allowed others to sell their turnips at their Re-tail when Reese was buying it for high prices.
there was a user here (forgot her name) whose retail was buying turnips for about 800 bells. she made a thread and kept that going for about a few month in her town by constantly adjusting the time to stay on the same date. it was super generous.
i still have so much money still because of that and it was like 4-5 years ago. im only in the 50m range.
ALSO a really fast way is some people will buy your TBT bells with in-game bells. idk the conversion but i think ive seen ppl use like 100 tbt for 5 million in game bells or wutever. so since i have around 2,000 TBT bells, that means i can sell it all for about 100,000,000 in game bells

I will often sell pocketfulls of perfect cherries in RedTropicalPeachyFish's town because she always has them on premium. Other than that, if I need lots of Bells, I go to the island at night and catch sharks and insects.
