How close next to each other can villager houses be?

I have a few villager houses that are next to each other (horizontally) with a 2 pattern wide space between the houses. Is it possible to have houses next to each other with only 1 pattern wide space between them?

You can't have only one space in between houses. Each house requires a buffer area of one space that can't be overlapping with another house's buffer spaces. So if you have two houses next to each other, one of the two spaces is one house's buffer, and the other is the other house's. If that makes any sense. Most of the PWPs have the same regulations.
