I'm currently planning an orchard in my town, but I'm concerned because I've heard that sometimes trees won't grow in an area that is overcrowded with trees, but exactly how many in an area is "too much"?

This is a bird's eye view of the area I'm talking about: planned PWPs are labelled, white squares will be empty and the green squares are going to be where the trees will be. There will be a small path running under the arch and trellis, and another horizontally through the trellis.

This is not an enclosed area - aside from the labelled cliff side, all the other sides are open and the trees are not touching any walls. Will this work, or would this be too many trees in an area for them to all grow properly?

Alternatively, I've thought of replacing some of the trees with bushes instead - would that fix an overcrowding problem, or would they also make trees wilt if there are too many around?

Alternative plans (orange represents bushes) -

I think I'm starting to prefer the latter a little more, actually.
If you read all that, thank you. :) Any help is much appreciated.

Edit: Additionally, I'm not sure if the Wisteria Trellis and Flower Arch would be considered too close together for this to even be possible. Is a one space between PWPs enough? I've wondered this for other things too, like putting benches side by side with one space between.

It will work, but you can't plant everything in 1 day. Plant 2 rows first and wait one day to see if they grow. Than you can plant 1 following row and wait another day to see if those grow. Keep repeating this to have the full orchard you desire. If you plant everything at once the middle trees will die.

This technique doesn't work for perfect fruit trees, unless you won't harvest them, since you won't be able to replace the dead ones without having to cut down other trees.

I think the one space between the PWPs would be good enough. Good luck getting Isabelle to move in the right area for it though!

Awesome, thanks a lot, both of you!

oath2order: Yeah, I know what you mean! Drives me crazy every time, gotta inch around the area to get it exactly where I want.

Actually you need two spaces between PWPs. (PWPs need at least one free space on all sides, and these spaces can't overlap)

Ah, darn. Back to the drawing board then. :( Thanks for letting me know!
