Greeting versus catchphrase confusion

Hi folks, many of the wikis and other Animal Crossing websites give the default catchphrase of each animal, but they do not mention the default greetings.

My question is, are catchphrases and greetings the same default word for each animal? For example, Marcel’s catchphrase is “non.” Kabuki’s is “meooo-OH.”

Kabuki asked me to suggest a greeting for him, but I noticed that it was a blank line when he asked me, so he did not have a default greeting. In other words, his default greeting was blank.

Marcel has just come up to me and asked me to change his greeting. Currently, his greeting is my name/his nickname for me (I set it like this on an earlier date, not knowing what to do).

To further add to the confusion, there is a third item that is the nickname that the animal can give the player. That can sometimes sound like a greeting. Such as “player name/nickname/greeting”!

Questions:

1. Are the default greeting and the default catchphrase the same?

2. Do some animals have a blank greeting (such as I found with Kabuki)? Or do they all have default blank greetings, and the player is supposed to suggest a greeting? I have not paid much attention to whether all animals are defaulted to a blank greeting.

3. If I want the animal to stay in its default state with its default greeting and default catchphrase, should I (a) change the blank greeting to the animal’s catchphrase, or (b) change the blank greeting to the animal’s nickname for me?

I have searched on this site and others, but I mostly find things on new catchphrase suggestions rather than the difference between greetings and catchphrases and the default ones. I prefer to leave everything with an animal as default.

Thank you in advance for your help! :lemon:

I'm pretty sure the default greetings are always blank until they request one from the player. Until then, they will just say default things like Hi, Hello, or Hey. I have seen them occasionally use their catchphrase at the beginning of a sentence, but it's not technically a greeting.

Unfortunately, I can't answer your question about resetting their greeting to the default, since the default is blank. I'm pretty sure if you try to leave it blank or remove whatever was there, it won't accept a blank answer.

Thank you. :lemon: Yes, I tried leaving it blank and you are correct; it does not let you leave a blank greeting once they have asked that it be changed.

I wish I understood the difference between a greeting and a catchphrase. I have tried setting the greeting to the same word as the catchphrase, or having them use my name as the greeting, or yesterday for example I had Marcel say “Bonjour.” But I wish it was more clear what the difference is between them.

If all of the greetings are default blank, then maybe it is supposed to be up to the player to add a greeting. The wikis don’t really cover it
