You get a Gold Axe for buying 50 tree saplings right? I'm sure I bought more than 50 already but Leif never talks to me after buying another sapling. Am I doing it wrong?

Maybe you still need to buy more xD; That's the only reason I know, make sure you have space in your inventory too.

If you didn't get it in your inventory, you didn't buy it. You should be buying out Leif's sapling/cedar tree every day (cedar trees count)
