I'm planning on resetting my town today. Before I do that, my friend is going to let me hold some of my stuff in her town while I reset. The thing is, I want to keep some stuff, but I want my new town to also be a new start. It wouldn't be a good idea to keep everything...so what things should I keep? I was thinking I might keep some DLCs since I can't get those back very easily. I'm still conflicted over how much money to keep and if I should keep my golden/silver tools or not. Any advice??

Bells? Only enough to get you started. If you like to go beetle hunting, then you shouldn't need much to start with
DLC? Of course. They are hard to come by and you wouldn't get all of them in your own game anyway..
If I were you, I would also grab a nice outfit and then leave any thing else behind.

My advice to you is if you want to start over on everything, then you shouldn't keep the gold/silver tools because you could always get them back. As for the money, I say keep a good amount that will help you start. Money isn't very hard to get in AC:NL.

If you truly want a new start, then I'd say don't transfer anything. It will make it harder, but if your goal is to start from scratch...! I do see the point about the DLCs. You'd either have to trade for them/buy them here or just do without.

when I reset, I didn't transfer anything. started completely fresh. I definitely don't regret it.
starting over again was part of the experience!
and OP if you want a fresh start, I think transferring basic tools, foreign fruit, and your favorite outfit would be fine. keep it simple.
I love re-setting, and I am on my 11th town by now. I usually keep a lot of stuff so here are some ideas.
Dressers, lamps, phonographs, and music.
My rococo furniture, and several wallpapers and floorings that are not available on Main St. One outfit, some black shoes, and the braids wig. Lots and lots of money.
My lovely phone. My best tools, including golden axe and watering can. A trash can. My hybrid flowers. A wetsuit. Some bush starts. Each kind of fruit.
The hybrids seem so much more numerous than all the rest combined. If you can do without your hybrids, that will make the move much easier.

If you're looking for a fresh start, I'd say take just the DLC and enough money for the first few house payments so you've got at least a little bit of room in your house.
