I do like Animal Crossing I really do but NL is getting a bit boring with all the repeated dialogue and having no goal.
I have Nintendogs + Cats and alot of DS games I could play.
Or should I stick to ACNL? I don't know....

Pokemon X or Y is a must have. You don't really have to have played the previous games because I didn't and I got along fine, but it helps when identifying pokemon! Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire came out really recently and that looks quite good too!
It's not one of those games that you can play forever though, the storyline finishes and I completed the game in just over two weeks. You can battle with friends and stuff after the storyline but it gets boring. But it's a must have.

I can recommend Fire Emblem Awakening..? Its a Tactic RPG game. It's really fun to play! And the cast of characters are really interesting. the story is nice too~

I have Super Smash Bros for 3ds and the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D. I love both games as much as ACNL. :3

Fantasy Life is a good one. Also, if you're into JRPGs, Bravely Default.
...or you can download the original Tetris from the eShop. I guarantee, you'll spend tons of time on that game. XD

Mario Kart 7 is awesome. I would recommend Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire too, but you said you weren't a big fan of Pokemon, so...
Tomodachi Life is a pretty fun game too. I spent months addicted to that game.

I'm a grown ass adult but I seriously LOVE Style Savvy: Trendsetters
If character customization in the sims/rpgs is your favorite, you will love it. Pretty much just a dress up game but there are a lot of other features & things to do too. There are over 10k clothing items in the game. I got mine for $12 at gohastings.

Elite Beat Agents for the DS is awesome if you haven't played it. Favorite portable rhythm game ever! It's under $10 on ebay.
I'm playing Super Mario 64 DS right now too. Still trying to get all the stars.

I haven't played it yet, but a lot of people are very into Fantasy Life right now. It's like RPG-lite with Animal Crossing style graphics!
If you want something closer to AC, you could do Harvest Moon. There are a few versions out on 3DS right now.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is fun too. It's more like a Choose Your Own Adventure book in game form, but it's awesome if you're into that. It's mostly text-based.

Awesome suggestions. Everything I thought of is covered in this post.

A simulation/customization game that I also enjoy is Tomodachi Life. It's unique in that it encourages you to use Miis of your friends and family which I think adds another element of hilarity and entertainment! I'd give it a try! :)

I've never played it before but I heard that Tomodachi Life is good. I also love Nintendogs + Cats, because you don't know what to expect from them, they act a lot like real animals. And taking them out on walks is like a new adventure everyday! Going back to WW is fun too, it's nice to just go back and get that nostalgic feel from it.

My 7 year old cousin visited over break and she had WW on the DS and
may I say, Mind blowing.

Everything was so different so instead of usually playing NL
I spent hours on WW making her town perfect. I may need to
get that for the wii xD

Different how?

As in, everything was small. My character had no PANTS. Tangy's face was boxy. Tortimer. The Gates with Booker and his brother. NO MAIN STREET. The Tailors and Nooks was together. NO ISLAND OR ISLAND FRUITS. You had bunk mates. Fishing was so much harder.

Oh yeah, when I played I didn't really notice any of that stuff because it was normal. I remember after playing city folk I played wild world once and I absolutely hated it. I couldn't stand the pointy edges and the awkward controls.

The only thing I like about WW now is the fact that the villagers' personalities are loud and clear. They're actually funny and less "toned-down", which I think the new leaf personalities were.

I prefer the GC personalities though. They were the best!

Yea, Omigosh. Ressetti xD
he almost made my cousin cry,
how he told you to say stuff like:

"Im so sorry!"
"Im dirt. DIRT!"
etc.

I'd recommend looking into Tomodachi life before you buy it. I have the game and I find it pretty boring, but you might like it. It just seems to be one of those things people either really like or really dislike.
MK7 and Smash are fun and you can play them for a pretty long time.
Fantasy life, Harvest Moon and Pokemon (either X/Y or ORAS) are pretty popular here, and all of them, especially Harvest Moon, share some similarities with AC.
WW didn't age very well. It's a lot like NL with less features and blocky graphics.

If you like puzzles/riddles/mysteries/etc. I'd say give the Professor Layton series a shot. Six games, plus a crossover game with Phoenix Wright. Each game has over 100 puzzles so it'd keep you occupied for a while.
