I'm gonna get a 360 tomorrow, and I wanted to know what the best option would be. I'm splitting the price with my dad. We're thinking about getting the arcade, and getting a hard drive later, but a hard drive would be nice to have for demos and all that. I could probably save up for one within a month or so. And I don't think he'd let me get an Arcade 360 AND a hard drive. Another option would be to get the core, and a hard drive. But I haven't heard very good things about the core lol... Plus, it's a refurb, so it's more likely to get the red ring or something.

I don't think getting the Pro is in the question, probably a bit too expensive to get atm.

What do you think I should do? any other options?

I want to stay under $300 or so, not including a game.

This is the part that declares me out of "my zone".

However, getting a hardrive is essential, yes acarde is all good, but like you said "Demos", plus it's needed for Live if you thinking/will need for demos.

ocrapz didn't realize that I needed a hard drive for live...

About the core... Is it a totally bad idea to get a core 360 and a hard drive? I've heard that it's crappy... Could anyone tell me why? xD

If you get Core, THEN the hardrive I think it'll cost you more in the long run.
So, my advice get it all together if you can. Even if this means NO games for a while, it may be the best opion.

well, a refurb core is $200, ($240 if you want a wireless controller, but I want to use the controller on my PC anyways) and a refurb hard drive is $60, and $100 new at best buy.

I don't really worry about the hard drive being a refurb, but the 360 itself worries me. Do you know anyone who got the core, and how well it works?

I'm going to have to recommend you not get the Arcade version... the Pro has a much better package for 70 bucks more (although I recommend you buy your consoles aroun the holidays.) Also, a core system due to its age probably will run the risk of RROD, and then you also have to buy the HD... so I'd suggest saving up for a new one.

Also, I think you may be able to still play XBL gold, however you probably can't download any extra game content.

woot.

I got the Pro package. Friggin amazing. Got Skate along with it.

No Xbox Live as of yet, my old wireless thingamajigger won't work, so I'm gonna get an ethernet cable, which will make it a bit faster anyways. I'll probably get CoD4 in a month or so.

I'll tell you when I get my gamertag and all that.

Doesn't the Pro come with an ethernet cable?

Or did you get it used?

Mine did, but I use Wireless anyway... meaning more money gone.
AND it costs WAY more for Brits to buy the wireless connector than in the US.
It costs what, $50? Over in England...

Oh, do you have to wire it downstairs?

When I first got XBL I also had to buy a TV for my room as our cable modem is also in my room.

it's in the same room, just a pretty big one. and the 360 and the modem are basically on opposite sides of it. I would use this Linksys wireless thingamajigger I used to use on my PS2, but when I plug it into the power, nothing happens (power light turning on, etc.). Must be a loose wire in the chord

:(

Actually, the wireless adapters here are 100 bucks....
Yeah, I'm not paying $100 for a wireless adapter. I'll stick with a cord going across the floor

:P
I trip over my cord all the time.. I'm too lazy to go buy a 5 dollar rug..

I think my dad got me the old linksys one for $40-50 or something. Obviously not as reliable though.

but the chord i still the best way to go, better connection and less money.

EDIT: oh and an update about xbox live and everything... My dad said that he has some cables and stuff lying around, and he could probably use them for the 360. I'll probably have my connection up by tonight.

as far as online gaming, I still only have Skate, but I have an idea of what I'm gonna get...

In a couple weeks I'll probably get shadowrun, only $20 anyways.

Long version: I wanted to get Rock Band on the PS2 before I had the 360, but my dad wouldn't let me, because I have small group every week (a group of middle school guys from my church come to my house, have a lesson, and play video games) and a few of the guys in the group would pound the drums to pieces. My dad said that as soon as Small Group stops happening, (summer) he'll get me Rock Band as a late/early birthday present.

Short Version: getting Rock Band as a late/early birthday present when summer starts.

Sometime within a few months, I might get CoD4.

Looking ahead quite a bit, but I'll probably pre-order GoW2.
