Gates Open?

Am I missing something or what? I can never visit other towns, I have several people as friend and they are online playing but I can never visit towns when I go to the train station. Is this because their gates are closed? Is there a way to direct message someone and let them know you want to visit? I am fairly new to the game and new 3DS, just curious as I would love to meet some friends and shop other towns and vise versa. Thank you

Yeah, their gate's must be closed or they've already got the maximum amount of visitors.
If you add someone as a Best Friend you can message them whenever you are online too!
