I'm thinking about making my fourth character a geisha. If you saw my last thread, I went with a lot of those home decorating options for my third character, who is a ninja.

I don't know how to set it up. Any ideas?

Quite unsure if you know what the geisha is. I don't mean to make the mood bad, just wanting to know 'cause so I could possibly suggest something? Geisha is essentially a prostitute, mostly girls who are sold and forced to be. So... is it, how you'd like to make the character's room, or is there any other image?

I read that geishas were misinterpreted by Westerners as prostitutes and that they were simply highly trained professionals in entertainment (art, music, performing, etc). Am I wrong? Obviously I wouldn't want to depict someone forced into prostitution.

I don't know where to even put a fourth house right now anyway. I'm busy working on my second alt's house interior.

Uh. It is hard to give it a good explanation with my spotty English, but okay I'll give it a shot. :) Please bear with me.
It's not misinterpretation.

"Highly trained", "professional" entertainer, this is true. Essentially the hostess, to entertain the customer, with their performance, fashionable clothes, fun talks and music. Or sometimes with other ways too. Such as, taking the customer to the tour to beautiful places, or the "Sadou" - tea ceremony. It requires high skills of various things and so they go through very hard training since very young age. And this training includes feting them sexually too.
Also they have the level/grade. After years of training, some of them are figured not much talented to fete the customer lavishly. The ones with high skills ( not only as in sexually but also all other skills to entertain ) get promoted and to be "Oiran" - this is the top class of geisha, or "Tayuu" - those who are not bad but not good enough to be a "Oiran", and, those who are ranked more lower. The ones in lower classes are in charge of chores, such as playing instruments as back band, cleaning, massaging or helping the higher class of Oirans to get dressed, etc. These lower class ones won't be engaged in sexual job. It's the right of higher class of geisha.
"Right" may sounds odd, but this is why I asked about the image of geisha earlier. Yes, it isn't their will to be engaged in this job at first. But as these all process of sever training makes them grow up to be a professional, for better or worse. So, there's a peculiar beauty of decadence, on life of geisha or how they live. My question earlier was for this, meant to ask if that's what you wanted to depict.

There's a very very old movie that's called "Yoshiwara Enjo". I think you'd see what I mean if you were able to watch this movie.

Your English is fine! I can understand what you're saying. :3

Hmm...that's too bad. I don't want to convey the wrong thing, so I'll stick to the characters I have and maybe add a samurai as a fourth character later on. Thank you for clearing this up for me!

Ahh felt at ease; I was worried if I didn't offend you as that happens at times due to language difference. U_U;
And you're welcome. Actually, I got inspired while talking about geisha's life. So I thank you as well. :)

Are you familiar with a documentary series made by the NHK titled either "Begin Japanology" or "Japanology plus". I am familiar with some history of the geisha from what little I've seen in a couple shows including Samurai Champloo. I'm aware they don't specific thing from back then anymore. Then there is the following:
Within the first minute, it brings up preforming arts, elegant hospitality, and says for centuries they were "fashion trend setters". That is one way of putting it.

I'm not saying you are wrong about anything, I just find it a bit funny how they are being portrayed now.

Hm, maybe I should've been more clearer.
There's a modern geisha and the ones before Showa era. Yes, modern geisha is determined as performer. But, it's like, so, the rules and guide lines of the Bell Tree Forums say that you're not allowed to sell/giveaway/trade any items that was made by hack/duping/etc. But? Actually? Same to it. The official determination doesn't always say the real situation.
And one more thing here is, this NHK - Japan Broadcasting Corporation - has been repeating to be prosecuted by, I don't know the very right words in English but, "made-up" these past years. In 2015, one documentary film that's called "Close Up Gendai ( Modern time )", last year, the show "Itte Q", etc. In both cases, they're accused by airing untrue story. If you looked into it, maybe you'd be able to find those journals? I don't know.

And lastly, or last off, I learned a lot about geisha from personal interest, as my grandma of my mother was geisha. To speak for her prestige, she was neither a girl who was sold nor be engaged in sexual job. Fortunately or unfortunately, she wasn't very talented, in that term. She worked as one of those lower class geisha, as back band.

Did I offend you?

I actually don't like Matt Alt in there, one of the hosts. He comes across as disrespectful and the bad kind of smug. Also he has said some incorrect things when he has been asked about western stuff, on a few occasions. I'd like to hear more about the NHK.

Oh, no no you didn't offend me. Just tried to explain the point, but if I sounded like that because my English, sorry!
