Is there any way to actually see your friendship level with your villagers?

No, but you can tell based on how they treat you. This is a table I made for myself to keep track

Favor Level	Friendship Points	Unlock
1 (Friends)	0-29	villagers start at 25
2 (Friends)	30-59	give/get gifts
3 (Good Friends)	60-99	sell items
4 (Good Friends)	100-149	change catchphrase
5 (Best Friends)	150-199	change greeting, get photo
6 (Best Friends)	200-255	buy/trade furni, get photo

This is so handy! Marina just asked me to change her catchprase so I am getting really close to get her photo!
