Hi!

I'm getting a second copy of the game and plan to make a cycling town. Would you help me with the rules you thing are most honest?

-First come first serve
-Reservations
-An other system *explain please*

I see most people use the first come first serve rule. Which, tbh, seems the most fair. If you do reserves, you can have one person that right away reserves a certain villager and then everyone else doesn't even get a chance. But that's just my opinion. I don't even cycle, I'm just telling you what I observe from cycle threads.

Reservations are annoying. You go through the work of holding the villager, and when they're finally ready to leave, they can't pick them up. And others who want that villager can. Next thing you know, that person hates you because you gave the villager to someone else.

First come, first serve is annoying too. You've been lurking for your dreamie for hours, leave for the bathroom for a few minutes, come back and they have been claimed by someone else. All that time - wasted. It's only easier for cyclers. Not easy on the people who want to adopt a villager.

I used to go by a chatroom and see who deserved them more, but rules changed and I had to change them. If any interest was shown in the past for a villager, they get first dibs. But if none of those people show up after 10 minutes, it changes to first come, first serve and the first person to claim gets the villager. Then, I raffle popular villagers off. I hold a 48 hour raffle. 24 hours to claim a spot, 24 hours to pick up. If by then, you don't say anything or can't pick them up, I move on. Then I take a picture of the results for the raffle and move on.

There are many things you could do, but I know reservations are a pain in the butt for cyclers and on the ones who are adopting the villagers. But first come, first serve sucks even more for the person who wants the villager. I know some cyclers have worked around that, but it's not easy to do so.

:walks away:

What about giving people 24 hours to put their name down for a villager and then choosing one at random? You can get a guaranteed random number from random.org for the draw.

I roll a dice and randomize the list depending on the number on the dice. I do use random.org.

I don't know... as others have pointed out, reservations are a pain for cyclers (I have both observed this and have been part of cycling threads (not on TBT) as a cycler). On the other hand, first come first serve is also unfair. You walk away for a second and someone who just appeared for the first time can just come take them. Or someone who is meh on that villager can take them and then void them later whens someone "better" appears, in the meanwhile, a person who really wanted that villager is screwed.

I wish there was a way to get villagers to the person that "deserves" them, however you define that.

Probably the best way is to run your own thread, and give them away to the usual lurkers or people who bother to get to know you and you know them. And you can do either first come first serve or reservations as you see fit for each villager. As long as you are up front about being flexible like that, I think that's fine.

I feel a little dumb for asking this, but what is a cycler?

By the way, I think what ZanessaGaily suggested, seems pretty fair. I think VioletsTown's idea is also fair.

I like first come first serve. If you stalk the forums more, you'll have a higher chance to get villagers you want. I don't like raffles because only 1 guy gets the villager, and 20 other people end up being sad because they were so close. Reservations are irritating because people either scam you or don't respond to you when you tell them the villager's in boxes, and then you have to give the villager to someone else.

I just joined the forums but will toss in my two cents.
First come first serve is probably the best solution. I don't know of any situations that's ever happened on these forums, but I know that reservations are annoying, but if you plan on doing reservations, you should have some sort of policy (ie Be aware that if you cannot pick up the villager, they will go to someone who can). Though, first come first serve is much easier and simple in my opinion.

Thank you all for your opinion. Every rule has pros and cons to it and I can never make everyone happy ofcourse. But your answers gave me kind of inspiration to make up some rules and the things I don't know yet I will learn along the way. I'm looking forward to become a new cycler :D

I think the most honest way to handle it is quick raffles.
Like, once you announce a villager a raffle opens up for said villager for the next five minutes. That should be enough time to let anyone who wants that villager to get a chance.

Just to make things go by faster, you can auto void less popular villagers

Indeed I will also include a rule about being able to pick up a villager, I don't want to have one in boxes for days

One thing I feel very strongly is that whatever you pick, there needs to be consistency. It bothers me that I had to raffle for a popular villager but a lot of other very popular villagers in the same thread were doled out in a simple, breezy, "Hey I know you because you've been hanging out in my thread, come pick them up". They should have had their chances diluted by twenty other people too.

I usually do first come first serve, raffles on the popular Villagers, and only hold/reservations for close friends.

I've seen many people do reservations, which seriously takes A LOT of work. And I've seen many people sell/auction off their popular Villagers for bells, which I think is.....dumb. LOL

There are lots of ways to cycle and there is always going to be that person that hates your rules :) Just do what works for you!<3

Other, i.e. raffles, 1st come 1st serve may generate some issues.

First come, first serve for less popular villagers, but I've had a couple popular villagers move out of my town and I held a raffle for them.

But, speaking from experience, it is REALLY annoying when the same person reserves the same villager on 15 different cycling threads.

I swear, when I was looking for Coco, the same person reserved her on all the cycling threads. >_> I waited and then a new one came up and I reserved my place there.
