Fantasy life... is it good?

Some of my friends did enjoy the game.
Hell it was like the only game they played for that November.

I'm tempted to buy it, but only time will tell when I eventually get the game.

I got it on EU release day, played it for about 10 hours and never touched it again.

I don't see the big fuss with it to be honest. It felt like all the boring grindy parts of an MMO without the enjoyable parts like shanking unsuspecting newbs and typing [anal] pummel in trade chat.

I've played quite a bit and I'd say it's pretty fun. I never really got bored of it because you can keep changing jobs and check out different "lives". I actually took the cartridge out of my 3DS because I was playing it WAYYYY too much. It definitely sucked me in. I'd say get it if you can, it's definitely a good game :). It's not entirely like Animal Crossing though, so I'm not sure why so many people compare the two.

The story line is short.
But the game is as long as you make it. I have 150 hours in it.

The game is pretty good. The ability to change lives and to play as many different lives is quite fun. The story mode isn't really that difficult and it isn't long either. There are many sidequests to keep you busy though. Not to mention you can buy the DLC to get more content for Fantasy Life. I would recommend getting the DLC because not only is it fun, but the battles are a lot more challenging and your skills will definitely be tested. One other thing I must say is that you can play with friends as well, but you can only play with them if they both have or don't have the DLC. You can't play with someone if you have the DLC and they don't and vice versa.

There is quite a lot of reading to it but there is also quite a lot of things to do. I personally love the game and think it's well worth it. One think I have to say is that I love the puns in this game lol 9/10 stars for me.

do people actually buy unopened games instead of just going to a store?

I don't get what you mean by that...Many of my games are unopened when I buy them and I get them from a store.

But maybe he just bought it with the intention of playing it but never got around to it.

Is it hard to enjoy the game without the DLC?

The game is still fun even without the DLC. There are still a lot of sidequests to do and missions that can test your skills for each life. Out of curiosity, what aspects are you looking for in the game?

Just walking about, discovering new things while doing so. Leveling up and doing the main story quest ince in a while

There are many different areas to see and discover whether you are playing the main story or just walking about and exploring on your own. You can level up in the process and you won't need to do too much grinding before playing in a certain area since as I said before, the story isn't really that difficult. The DLC offers one new world to explore. You will also get access to very powerful items too. The DLC world has a lot of challenging enemies and missions.
