There's not a single best class. They all work together and synergize well.

I've only had a chance so far to play as a cook. However, I've found it most beneficial as you're in constant need of food whilst exploring/fighting :)

There isn't a best class, they all interact with one another. you first need a fighting life.....mercenary, paladin, hunter or magician so you have some skills to kill the monsters you encounter in any life, as you carry all your skills with you whatever you do, you need to be a blacksmith and carpenter to make the gear you will need to fight and furnish your homes, you need to be a miner and a woodcutter to provide the blacksmith and carpenter with the things they need to craft, you need to be an alchemist to make the potions to help you fight, you need to be a cook to feed yourself and you then need to be an angler to provide the fish you cook, and lastly you need to be a Taylor to provide the best clothes of the highest stats you can wear to fight the monsters.

It is totally impossible to choose the best, but I do think you need to start with a fighting life and paladin seems to be a popular choice and one where I started although I did move on to Mercenary quite quickly.

The thing is you choose the one that makes you happy and add the others when you want to, there is just so much option available to you, I imagine that everyone playing this game plays it differently from the next person, but that is what is making it such a great game

For me, personally; Paladin. I'm no good at the mini games and get bored easily with them, so I have a lot of trouble ranking up in those Lives. Woodcutter and Miner are fun too. Angler might be as well, but I haven't tried that yet. It's on my To Do list, though.

That being said, if there's one Life I'm probably not going to try it's the Magician one because of the SP it uses. Might try Mercenary and Hunter, though. But I'll pass on Magician.

I'll go with Hunter. I haven't tried out the other combat classes though, but the hunter style fits me well.

I enjoy the Miner, Woodcutter, Angler and Tailor Lives as well.

But, as a lot of guides say, when you start, you better pick up 1 Combat Life (Paladin/Mercenary/Hunter/Magician) and take the 3 Gathering Lives (Miner, Woodcutter, Angler). Then go off on your adventure!

With your combat Life, you'll have to kill monsters and such, and if you have the gathering Lives as well, you can gather materials in the same area as you have your combat Life challenges and the main quest too.

That way, you can level up 4 Lives at the same time ;)

I prefer hunter for fighting (to the point of switching to bows for the other fighting lives' challenges :) ) I don't really see the point of Magician, since other classes do the same or higher damage without being forced to use SP.

Take the 3 gathering lives (you can even complete most of their challenges while playing a different life), and the crafting lives that make equipment for your character. Stats don't really matter for the main story, so you can just raise all the stats you need, and restat after you finished the story.
