Error 018-0516

Hopefully this is the right place to post this...

Lately it's impossible for me to connect to other people towns, and everytime I get the error 018-0516

What I can do:
- Use the browser
- Use Miiverse
- See which friends are connected
- Talk to Porter, select to visit/have people over, connect to the internet, see the other people's town

What I cannot do:
- Connect to the other people's town

If there are two ds connected to my home wifi, they can connect to each other just fine, both through local and wifi connection.

What I have already done:
- Set a fixed IP address for my ds
- Put the ds in a DMZ (didn't work), then
- Opened all the router ports for the ds IP
- Disabled the router firewall
- Disabled the connection password (didn't work, so I put it back up)
- Deleted the wifi connection from the ds and started from scratch

I am now stuck Can anyone help me?

Annedoctal, using Pok?mon X, I played online with a friend while we were connected to different wifi

Also, can you play Pokemon x online with your home wifi? Also, when did this start? Did you get a new router? So many questions, I know.

I can play pokemon x from my home wifi.
I'm not sure when this started, but I did change routers, so it might be connected.

I have two different ds: one ds xl (eu) and a new ds (jp) and neither of them can connect through acnl
The ds xl could connect through pokemon x

So I'm guessing it's your new router. There's settings in your router that can actually interfere with ACNL being able to connect to other people's town.
Another random other question: Can people connect to your town?

Have you made sure you NAT is set to "Open"?

Just too eliminate yet ANOTHER troubleshooting question, what manufacture is your router, new and old?

Try erasing all data for 3DS if you have no downloaded games.

Error 018-0516 is a network communication error, and shouldn't have to do with 3DS parental controls. But if you did put on parental controls recently, that is something to look into.

Yes to the troubleshooting step question

I am not sure how to check if my NAT is open

Router is the one that came with my internet plan (Telecom Italia, an italian provider)

How would I check parental settings that might interfere? (there shouldn't be, but just to be sure)

If you have opened your ports then I'm not sure what other issue it could be. I can't find any in good information about the Telecom router you have, and I have no experience with it. So I would contact your internet provider, and ask them to help with the router they provided you. If they confirm that your NAT is open, then contact Nintendo, but I believe it's your router so Nintendo will probably just direct you to your router provider.

Although this probably won't help, you can try and factory reset your 3DS.
