Easier way to communicate?

I'm finding it very hard to talk to people on the 3DS to see if they want to play.. From my experience with the 3DS, there isn't a way to message friends (pleeeease correct me if i'm wrong). Also, when I can see that someone is online, playing New Leaf, how exactly should I go about asking them to game with me? I don't mind having to private message someone on here, I'm just seeing if there is a more convenient way to go about this.

Thoughts? Answers? Solutions?

btw, I'm very new to the game.. so if you want to friend me, I won't object

I really hope nintendo works on this. But yes the best friend list works best that way you guys can be working on your own towns and still talk also
