Okay, I'm looking to get into DnD. I've played all of the Video games and what not but I kinda wanna have a go at the Pen and Paper version of it.

Of course I'll need to spen cash on the manuals dice ETC. But I also wanna know some extra stuff like. What edition did they introduce the models. (Or have they're always been models) if they're have been models I'm not so sure I want it.

Can I play solo or Do I need a group? Does anyone else on here play it. What edition should I get (Note. I don't want models.) and If anyone has any comments about it or anything like that please let me know.

I'd like some help for this. Thanks in advance.

Wraiths.

One person playing kinda sux...
Unlike in the videogames, in PnP one character stands no chance.

Plus, its more fun when you have at least 4 people.

And also, what do you mean by models? Little statues to represent your characters?

Or do you mean set guidelines a characters for stats and skills?

If you mean it in my second definition, then yes, sort of. You can choose any combination of skills for your class, and sometimes you can have two classes. Your beginning stats are determined by your race, but iirc, you have the choice to which stats you want to be your highest from then on.

But you won't be able to survive long if you decide to be a spellcasting halfling rouge with high strength, meaning, if you try to make your character balanced all around, the weaker you will be. I know that in some of the videogames your character can hold his own using both physical weapons and magical spells, but in PnP, that will not be the case.

Buy Version 4.0.
It's the newest, obviously, and apparently they watered down some of the things to make it easier fo beginners, and overall make more sense.

NO. NO. NO. BAD DF.

Version 4 is the worst version of them all. Get 3.5. Dice are the most important part of the game. Miniatures can be useful in some campaign's, but not others, depending on the DM. Playing by yourself doesn't work either, so you need a group. As starting dice, get 1 D20, 1 D12, 1 D10, 1 D8, 2 D6 and 1 D4. (D# = number of sides on the die.)

And like I said, version 4 is possibly the worst of them all and I recommend against playing it, but if your group is playing it, I guess that's what you'll have to play.

Thing is, I have no group. So I guess I can't play it right? Unless there is someway to play it online.

Online DnD isn't that great. I've tried it with friends and it doesn't work out so well.

Best bet is to try find guys who've played it a while to help you learn.

I have played 3.5 and 4 and honestly I do like 4, but for now 3.5 has a ton more official options made.

I liked just being a rogue for the longest time, but my current character is a duskblade dread necromancer (we are doing a gestault thing which lets us do 2 classes at once, making the characters a little overpowered, but it is fun :P)

anyway 4.0 really isn't bad especially for new people. It seems a lot easier to just start in my mind, but you willl need to find people to play with... preferably at least one person who has played enough to be a dungeon master, it takes time to make quests :-p

Eh, I just don't like how they laid 4 out. At level one, we faced a boar with more hit points than all of us combined and it almost killed us.

Plus our DM for that campaign was terrible and gave us 200 gold for a deity avatar dragon...

By the way, that is a pretty awesome character you're playing.

Okay, So to try to find a group, is there a place I can go to (In my town/city) to find a group of people willing to play. And you said Online isn't that great. That would mean there is an online option. How do I find it does it cost money and do I need the game at home with me or is it on the internet?

The "online" option is me and some of my friends can't get together due to one being at university, so we tried playing over MSN.

I LIKE 4.0

All the rules in 3.5 confused the *CEN-2.0-SORD* outta me. D:

4.0 is DnD for dummies. Which is what I need.

See, 4 was too loaded down with BS for me. Learning off 3.5 was way better than 4.

I usually throws half of the rules away anyway...
I play so rarely. I mean, really really rarely. Like, we started off at level 10 because we wouldn't have the time to level up, and we advanced straight to dungeons.

Wow, you actually go in dungeons?

Very few games I play actually involve dungeons.
There was one dungeons and we spent like 2 hours trying to take down this construct. D:
Like an hour of that was actually playing. The rest was yelling at this one kid who, instead of attacking, constantly used a Rod of Wonder and turned me blue.

XD Very nice.

Don't Rod of Wonder's cost a crapload of money though?

We all started with a nice chunk of gold to spent on whatever we wanted.
Remember, this was like a four-session campaign we had running.
