Dumb question about villager trade

Ok, new to the whole villager trade thing, if I have 10 and they have 10 but we both have someone in boxes, will it work, or does there have to be an actual empty slot?

Sorry, there has to be an empty spot in one of your towns for it to work

Empty slot. When people say villager trade, it's not a seamless trade. Someone has to offer their villager first, then the receiver needs to have an empty plot of land for the villager to occupy. Once this is done, the receiver typically TT's until the villager they were supposed to trade is ready to move out, so they can complete their end of the trade. There is inherent risk with this, obviously. Don't get scammed.
