Does creating stepping stones change whether fish spawn?

So I keep seeing these cute rivers and lakes people create with little square terraformed bits of land in them, that can be used as stepping stones. I was wondering though if that affects whether fish will spawn? Or whether areas will be read as a river or a pond or something else and the types of fish change (like how if you have/make a pond you can catch different fish than in a river)

Fish will still spawn as long as the pond/river is large enough (which i believe is like 2 or 3 tiles wide minimum? need to test that) HOWEVER they can be a pain to actually fish in because if you jump across to the next stepping stone, any nearby fish will swim away. Just be careful if you intend to do a lot of fishing in them lol

I don't know the differences between what classifies as a pond and what classifies as a river, but if you have a waterfall connected to it going down it's normally a river.
