Do you refer to Tom Nook and Kapp'n as their English or Japanese species?

Tom Nook is a tanuki, and Kapp'n is a kappa, but due to those not being very popular over in North America, their translations referred to them as raccoons and turtles, respectively, if I'm correct. Do you like to refer to them by the species that they were originally supposed to be, or their translated species?

I usually refer to them by their translated names. Like "Tom Nook, you dirty raccoon, stahp stealing all my money!"

I learned their original speices first, so I haven't even really noticed the translations until now. Hahaha!

il understand in both and i really dont mind because i used to platy mario so i know its tanooki but i also its a racooon because for us kinda look like them
but kapp i like to think its a turtle because i like turtle

eeh i mean i think of kapp'n as a kappa but tom nook is often a raccoon in my mind, even tho i know he's a tanuki.

tanuki and kappa. i mean, their species is sor of incorporated into both of their names...

yeah this, I don't think the raccoon turtle thing is really recognized... its just kinda what Americans did to rationalize and label what they are without actually learning the backstory

I've always known Kapp'n as a kappa and Tom Nook as a raccoon. I didn't realise he is a tanuki; I didn't even know what a tanuki was. But Google inages is revealing that it is something adorable. Now I know!

Like most other people, I only knew the translated names. I like the original names better but when I insult Tom Nook, I'm more likely to think of the word 'raccoon' than 'tanuki' no matter how cute I think they are. I'm planning on learning Japanese (I suck at it right now I can only recognize 6 characters of hiragana and write/say the word love in Japanese) so that might change. I might just call him something worse like I usually do. But yeah, tanuki or raccoon, Tom Nook is evil either way. And Kapp'n will always be a friend of mine no matter what he is.

Well, I refer to them by their Japanese species. I mean, Nook isn't really a raccoon. He's a tanuki, or a raccoon dog in English. Totally different species. xD

Japanese species. Tom Nook doesn't really look like a raccoon and Kapp'n doesn't look much like a snapping turtle, lol.

Kappa and tanuki, since I knew what they were when I started playing. Also, they are very obviously a tanuki and kappa, haha.

Depends on the version I play. I see Tanukichi as a tanuki and Kappei as a kappa, but I see Tom Nook as a raccoon, and Kapp'n as a sea turtle. Probably helps the lines they say in their respective versions do say things like tanuki versus raccoon, so that makes a difference too.

Thanks, I googled "tanuki" and got freaked out. Tom Nook looks NOTHING like a tanuki! Then again, he doesn't really look like a raccoon o__o

It seems to work out fine to know them as both their Japanese mythical creatures titles and to recognize them as a raccoon and a turtle.

I personally "refer" to Tom Nook as "Nook the Crook" a title he earned as far back as City Life when it was very clear (then and now) that the Tanuki is absolutely a quite greedy raccoon !!! lol

I normally refer to them as tanuki and kappa though sometimes I do call Tom Nook 'that damn racoon.'

I have plenty of little nicknames for Tom Nook as well <3

I had heard he was a Tanuki, that's where the name comes from right? What's his japanese name, is it also Tom Nook?

As for Kapp'n, that might explain why he looks so strange. Kappa fits better than "sea turtle".
