Do Villagers have items they just don't get rid of?

I've been trying for hours to get Papi to replace his modern wood shelf with a pave bookshelf, but he never replaces it. Are there some pieces of furniture villagers don't replace? I think the same might be true of each of my villagers actually :/ I thought it might've just been snooties who do this, but I think there is at least one piece of furniture in some villagers' houses that are irreplacable.

I'm guessing it might be those items they won't sell to you when you visit their house.

It is conpletely random. Or they just don't wanna let go of it.

Yes, they all have a few(?) pieces they will never give up. I'm not sure how many, but like stated it's the stuff they refuse to sell.

I don't know because Zell had a gorgeous counter and he wouldn't sell it to me but got rid of it for a green counter I maimed to him. I think it's just random!

Yes, whatever they refuse to sell you when they visit, they cling to with a grip not even death could loosen. Until Reese convinces them to put it up at Re-Tail.

Yes that >_< I've been eyeing an item from Celia, but she won't let me buy it, even though I already bought three other pieces of furniture.
I do hope Reese will convince her someday in that case! =D It's the marshmellow cushion, or something like that. It's cute and I want it!

Have you tried sending her a customized sofa to replace it? I just customized a piece of furniture for Muffy but I have never tried getting a villager to replace furniture yet.

Well, there are some villagers that have fully customizable houses, but there're villagers like Pecan who don't replace some things period. There are items in every villagers houses you can't buy, but you can replace them if they ask for an item to replace it. With every villager if you give them an item when they ask for it they replace items they don't sell, but Pecan will just put any 2x2 item in her inventory and never replaces her regal bed no matter what I give her. I think that there are certain permanent items.
