Do I really need a cranky villager on my Island?

Hi All,

I am just about to start a redesign of my very first island that is almost a year old and during that year I have had all the same villagers with differing personalities except for a cranky so I am wondering do I really need a cranky villager? I am hesitant to get rid of one of my beloved villagers just to get a cranky villager I may not like or my other villagers don't get on with so I am hoping other players can help me out here as in is it worth getting a cranky villager or do players only use them to get the reactions they may need? All thoughts and info very much welcome..

There are some Cranky exclusive Emotions that can be unlocked. If you already have them or don't care about them, then I would say it is up to you. If you still need them, then you'll need a cranky around.

You don't have to worry too much about your other villagers getting along with a cranky in NH. Their personality is like a sweet old man that has a good relationship with the player, but struggles to keep up with their fast paced neighbors (especially peppy villagers).

I'd say if you end up finding yourself wanting to move someone out, then that would be a good time to give a cranky a chance. I myself am not a huge fan of lazy or jock villagers, but I found that having one on my island for a while they grew on me (Rod and Hopkins specifically). Also there can be slight dialog differences between even the same personalities, so I like some lazy villagers more than others.

I'd recommend Genji, Dobie, or Chief as I feel like they have some of the least abrasive designs for cranky villagers.

Thanks TheDuke55,

I understand it's up to me I have never played with a cranky villager so am was just wondering if it was worth a try lol

Hi Venn,

I really have no idea what the cranky exclusive emotions I suppose I should have looked them up before asking the question-)

Hi Firesquids,

Thanks for that explanation it really helped me understand Cranky more and I am actually waiting or Dobie's Amiibo to be delivered plus I understand your comments regards Jock villagers but as they arrive with the first villagers when starting an island I have kind of kept them so my first island has Rudy and my second has Genji, off I go to look up Chief-)

Yea as others have said you don’t have to if you don’t want to. Dobie is a great cranky to have. I happen to really like the cranky villagers. My first island has Frett and my second has Static and Dobie. You could always just have one around for a short amount of time just to get the reactions and DIY’s.

No. I don’t have any snooties on my island. If you don’t want a personality type, don’t have a personality type. I h have two cranky villagers on my island: Chief and Butch. I love both of them.

Unless it was changed, I believe there are some diys that are connected to personalities of villagers. I do not know about the cooking recipes though. So if you want to make sure you get all the diys, then you may need a cranky on your island for a little while. Or you can trade with people here on the forums to get the diys you are missing.
There are interactions connected to the personalities of villagers also, but if you don't care about getting all of them, or if you already have all of them, then I suppose it doesn't matter if you have a cranky on your island or not.

Like the above person is saying there are some DIYs that you can only get from crankys but you can also get them from DIYs bottles on the beach(but RNG can be brutal) or from trading with other players so having a cranky might make it be easier to get these exclusive DIYs if they matter to you.

Thanks everyone,

Azurill I just looked up the DIY's and reactions from cranky's and there is more than I thought there would be so maybe it is worth getting one for those but I tend to grow quite attached to my villagers so letting one go for a cranky is an issue then in the future it may be difficult for me to let the cranky go too lol (I know I am weird over my digital animals-)

NicksFixed Gruff's colors are lovely however they would not fit my island right now..

Croconaw Crankies must be good if you want 2 of them-)

MiniPocketWorld I am still deciding. One minute I feel I am missing out if I don't try a cranky next I am not sure again, I will get there lol

BrokenSanity I probably will try a cranky in the future because of all the info/comments on this thread and yes waiting for balloons and bottles for some DIY's can be brutal however thankfully on my first island I have every DIY so if I want something on my second one I make it and hop it over to my second island..

Not weird at all. It takes me forever to let villagers leave since I get attached to them. Usually I only let go of the villages I have Amiibo cards for so I can bring them back easily. Most of the villagers on my second island I don’t have Amiibo cards for so they will be staying permanently. The last two even though I have their card I don’t think I will have leave either lol.

Azurill,

It's good to know it's not just me that gets attached to my villagers-) I have some amiibos but when they come back with no memory of their previous time they spent on the island it is a little sad as the relationship needs rebuilding all over again. Like you I have amiibos of some of my favorites and the ones I don't like you will also not be going anywhere either..

Yea it would be great if they came back and remembered you and their time on your island.

Not really. I’m missing snooty villagers, and the island runs smoothly. (Or smoother, depending who you ask.) Personally, I love the cranky villagers though. They’re like funny uncles.

Chrysopal

Just looked up Gonzo he looks rather cute!

QueenCobra

it's weird because I quite like the snooty villagers so I am sure I will come around to a cranky in the end lol

I'd definitely recommend a cranky! They're one of my most favorite personality types in the game; I love them so much in fact I have 3!! Chief, Curt, and Wolfgang, my old man triple threat team 😂🤣 Chief is definitely my favorite and I highly recommend him!

I know the label "cranky" might be off putting, but they're really not that crabby; I heard they were definitely spicier in the older games but for NH they're super toned down and won't be yelling at you every time you talk to them I promise (unless you give them good reason to lol)
They're super funny and their "old man" ways are hilarious to watch XD But they can be really sweet and cute, and can be like that one cool uncle you have or a father figure 🥺 They also call you "kiddo" and I think that's super adorable 😭💖

On top of that, yes they do give specific Reactions that you can only learn from a cranky; other than that there's no real "reason" to have them and if you're not into the idea you don't have to get one, but I'd say give it a chance, cause you might be surprised like I was!
