I've been running my paths everyday for two weeks now. It looks like my dirt patches are spreading to stretch on to the paths where I'm running, very slowly. If I squint I'm starting to see a small color difference along my paths I'm running. It's not great but maybe a half shade off. I'm starting to get discouraged. I time traveled three days but ran the paths then. Otherwise I haven't time traveled at all. Is it supposed to start with the mud kind of spreading? I'm getting discouraged. I'm running my paths more but I feel like I'm not seeing very good results.
I hear some people can get dirt paths without trying to hard but my towns always been pretty immune to grass wear.

mine take a while to get started, it takes maybe a week for it to start to form even slightly

I've never actively tried to make dirt paths, so my advice is probably not very good. However, I've seen people say that TT'ing doesn't really work because the grass regrows? I've seen it suggested to just save, quit, and re-open the game to the same day and run down the paths. I'm not sure how that works, but I just remember seeing someone say that's better than TT'ing.

I feel like people who say they aren't really trying just play so regularly and run those same paths all the time that they don't notice that it slowly wears down :P With dirt paths you really have to play every single day for it to work. They take so long to create but grow back very quickly if you forget to play 2-3 days in a row, especially during rainy season. I literally ran my paths everyday, save/quit and do it again, then time travel to the next day and repeat. After about 3 months of in-game time traveling and running around like crazy, i finally have a solid path and can "chill" and play regularly. It takes dedication man, both the time traveling and non-time traveling way. Either way you're playing "everyday". Actually, it's kinda sad how much time I spent making mine but I guess it was worth it in the end :'D

I'm guessing this is the stage when you feel discouraged. The grass looks kinda lighter but there seems to be no progress at all. If you keep running that path everyday, in a month it will start to fade away and form those ugly light veiny stars that look terrible because it's so "halfway" lol. But give it a couple more weeks of running and you're good.

This is a couple weeks before I'd say my dirt paths were completely the way I wanted them to be. If you see the right side in the 1-square path leading out of the cafe, it doesn't look very solid yet, but from this point it will wear down very quickly.

ALso, it's bound to look a little jagged and uneven if your pathway itself is not straight, so I would compromise and just let those types of paths slide. There's a few in my town that aren't "full" but still look good to me.

Sorry if that made like no sense but I hope it helped a little.
