I hope this is posted in the correct place on the forums, I wasn't absolutely sure where to put it.
DISCLAIMER: As far as I know based on pouring over everything I can find on the subject this is something new. I hesitate to call it new as the game has been out a long time and I am sure someone somewhere uses this technique, if it is not new, I apologize for retreading old ground. I have found a form of villager cycling that gives you the ability to focus more on getting specific villagers while moving villagers out of your town.
This cycling method assumes that you are either
A: using a secondary town as a cycling town
B: giving away characters, but would still like to be able to have some control over which ones you are giving away. IE: helping a friend get a dreamie, or trading one for TBT/collectibles
C: starting fresh and wanting to start with a specific dreamie.
D: don't care about losing any of the villagers in your town.
This is NOT a form of cycling that allows you to keep your existing dreamies in the same town, although it does allow you to get each and every villager that leaves your town to leave in boxes. I developed this technique when my younger sister lost her favorite character Eugene, I saved him in an alternate town and since my sister had no interest in her other villagers I began cycling in her town. Since there was very little for me to gain from this I started doing a little testing and found a way to search for my own dreamies while cycling for her, my Cycling pattern is as follows:
**This assumes you start with 8 Characters if not simply do steps 1,2,x, and 5 until you have 8 characters.**
Step 1: Start with a character in boxes or having just moved out. TT 1 month forward load Mayor and save
Step 2: TT 1 month forward a second time.
Step x: Don't do this step unless you have more than 8 villagers in your town. Load Mayor and save.
Step 3: Start a new character and find the villager plot. Take down the name and compare it to this chart: http://i.imgur.com/3Q1rVll.jpg find the type of villager you have in the plot. Normal, Smug, Jock, Cranky, Peppy, Uchi, Snooty, or Lazy. If the villager type is not the one you desire Load the Mayor on this date then skip to step 5.
Step 4: If the type of villager(s) you want matches the type of villager found continue to start new characters until the villager you want is in the new plot, then build a house and save. CONGRATULATIONS! You found him/her!
Step 5: skip ahead 5 days to get a villager in boxes to give away, void, or trade to your alternate town.
Step 6: Repeat
Using this method you lower the odds of finding a character you want by a large amount! This means more dreamies in less time!
Here is the math:
There are 337 characters in the game, therefore your odds of finding a specific character are 1 in 313 and do not change once you have had at least 24 characters in your town (16 unable to repeat characters and 8 current characters). Every cycle you do using normal methods you take approximately 10 minutes to get a 1 in 313 chance at the specific character you want, if you want any 1 of 30 different characters you have approximately 1 in 10 odds of finding any given character you want, or 1 character in every 100 minutes spent looking. This character will likely not be an exact match of favorite but might be good enough.
The trick to my strategy is that it lowers your odds of finding a specific character! The personality type of character that will spawn in your town will be the same for every new character load, for example if I am looking for Cousteau I would only keep loading new characters when a Jock was moving in, if I wanted canberra Iwould only load new characters if an uchi was moving in. The best part is how much your odds change using this method and how much less time to get specific characters it can take.
Here are the odds of getting the EXACT character you desire if you already have the correct personality type
Lazy 1:50
Normal 1:49
Jock 1:48
Snooty 1:48
Cranky 1:45
Peppy 1:45
Smug 1:31
Uchi 1:21
without the personality type 1:313
The other thing is it takes less time to load a new character than it takes to change the date 3 separate times and load the game each time. The 3ds is not very quick at going into settings and back to games, in comparison it should take about half as long to make a new character. This means more attempts to find your character at better odds.
With 25 new character loads you have close to a 50% chance of attaining the character you want!
Each new character load will take you approximately 5 minutes so therefore within 4 hours of searching you can *almost* guarantee any character in the game that you desire.
This is a very conservative number I think that it would likely take 1 hour or less in most circumstances to find any desired character with any small amount of luck. I myself have used this technique to get exact characters I desired. if you have a list of 2 or 3 characters in a personality type that you are happy with it also greatly increases the odds of finding one of them. By lowering your odds you are putting the randomness of the characters given to you less and less up to a lottery and more into your own hands.
a quick comparison if you were simply consistently cycling villagers every 10 minutes or so you would *almost* guarantee the exact villager you wanted only every 3130 minutes or one dreamie in approximately 2 Days, 4 Hours. My technique *almost* guarantees a dreamie in approximately 4 hours, 13 times faster.
I hope this helps you if you are searching for specific characters using a cycle. If this has already been posted and I have overlooked it I apologize, I came up with this on my own using existing techniques and modifying them to suit my needs.
EDIT: You can use the technique of creating a new character to check the villager type any time a villager moves in, this means you can also use that technique in your main town to try to get a villager you want.
