You just don't have any more animals showing up for a house design. The only animals you see outside are the ones that you designed for and randomly wandering around town.
But otherwise the game doesn't do anything special. There's no mention that you did them all and you don't get anything special for it.

I was hoping you'd be able to design something cool, or unlock a super rare item that can't be saved to cards (like the mannequins in New Leaf) xD
Or maybe your own house... can we design our own hose in HHD?
I've not really been doing the main street, only animals homes...

Nope, you don't get a house.
The main street buildings are really fun to decorate, but IMO there isn't enough of them. It's probably a good thing that it sounds like you're taking your time with them.

^To be fair, we can't design for everyone yet. Maybe something happens once you get all the special chars from the amiibo cards? / All dlc villagers?
But I believe we know of all furniture in the game and how to get it (and whats coming up), and there isn't an icon for a players house in the data mine.

Yeah once you design for everyone there is just the DLC and SP amiibo cards that haven't come out yet after you finish all the villagers. Also I agree that the main street buildings are fun to do but there isn't enough of them, that's why I like when the villagers ask for shops and banks and stuff, I think it's fun! In fact I just did Gala's bank that I'd been avoiding and I actually and pretty proud of it. ^u^
