as far as i know it's all random. however rare mushrooms are more common when your island has a higher star rating

I'm yet to find any elegant mushrooms yet too, I think maybe they're just rarer than the skinny, round and flat mushrooms.

As I was time traveling I did notice that elegant mushrooms spawned less often then the skinny, flat and round shrooms. I'd say they're right under rare mushrooms in rarity.

i have actually found a bunch of them! it's interesting to see that some people are having trouble finding them. i have yet to get a rare mushroom though. if you're still having trouble finding some, i wouldn't mind lending you a few!

I have the opposite problem: I have at least 5 elegants, but have not found a single rare one and my island has a 5-star rating. Odd!

I’ve found a lot, but then I’m mainly looking for skinny and flat ones so of coarse I find the other ones the most.

They're insanely rare, seems like. At least elegants and rares don't require 'perfect' town status like in prior games, but the rates are still tied to your ranking, unfortunately. I wound up giving up and buying some here on the forums, oops. :B

Elegant mushrooms seem to be the rarest ones in my experience...(even rarer than digging up the "rare" truffles, IMO). Anyway...I still haven't got any darn recipes aside from the mushroom wreath. So...I almost don't even care. Lol.

I've been finding 1 a day for the past 5 days, but for the first 3 days I didn't find any. It's just random. As has been stated, Rare and Elegant Mushrooms seem to be more common on higher-ranked islands.

Yeah, they're rare. In this video their rarity is explained at about the 2 minute mark. At a five star island the chance of spawning one is 15% as opposed to 25% for the regular mushrooms and 10% for the rare mushroom.
Which is strange because I keep digging up rare mushrooms and I've only ever found 2 elegant ones!

out of the entire month so far, i've literally just found my first elegant mushroom. it took 9 days for one to spawn for me - don't give up!

I've been finding loads of elegant mushrooms on the second level of my island, they're always in places that are hard to access like on decorative cliffs, etc. I only have a 4 star rating since my island is new so keep looking, they're not impossible to find! The first week of mushrooms I barely got any but I time travelled a few days ahead into the end of the week and found there was more then. Maybe as the week goes on more will appear for everyone!

Of course, after I said that elegant seemed to be the rarest, I found almost exclusively elegant mushrooms today. Lol.
