No this it not normal..... Physical or Digital copy?..... Do you do duplicating bugs or anything like that? If so you might have corrupted your save data.
 
I definetly played without internet. Maybe it was trying to connect, try putting it in airplane mode.

edit: just to clear up, I have this trouble with internet sometimes where I can connect but I wont recieve any data, so the games keeps trying and trying forever, so I just disconnect.

It shouldn’t as I play with airplane mode on, maybe try to repair the software....
 
Is your Switch registered as the primary console? 'Cause that was the problem I had. Got the game via eShop, couldn't play it one day because of faulty internet, thought I can't play it without internet at all, turns out the Switch I used was not set as the primary console. May check out this thread, perhaps it helps you with your problem?
 
I have just unplugged my Nintendo Switch USB LAN Adapter and disabled the Wi-Fi on my Nintendo Switch to test this out as I wanted to see if I get the same results and I can confirm that I am able to access the game perfectly fine.
 
That's definitely not right. You don't need internet to play it. I hope turning the game off and then back on helps!
 
Certain islands tend to load incredibly long, but I don't think anyone figured out why. If it's longer than 10 minutes then I'd be worried, but if your save file is corrupted or something like this I think it'd just say that.
