I'm using Zucker as my "informant", but he's not very helpful; he keeps on asking me for fruit instead.

So far, no pings, but someone will soon.

EDIT: As far as I know, it just means keeping an eye on the thread for developments related to that villager.
It does help me with who to look up in case I get pinged; makes more sense to let someone know if they're already 'on' the thread instead of being PM'd out of nowhere.
