Customizable vs separate item?

How do you know which items can be craft-customized to have all the colors (like the crescent-moon chair) versus the separate variants of that item (like floor lights)?

The only way really is to buy the item and check if you can customize it.

Or you have use the online databases (like nook exchange) as guidelines to know which one is customizable or not.

It's actually kind of hard to tell unless you try to customize the item.

The hammock, for example. I thought I could fully customize it, but was surprised to see that you can only change the cloth. Gotta find the other variants.

The beach ball... It has variants and not customizable when I'm under the impression that you can.

DIY items can be fully customizable though. As long as you see a paintbrush icon on it's recipe.

I think for DIYs like the crescent-moon chair, they have a paintbrush icon on the card image (when you view your DIY collection), indicating it can be customized.

But for items you can buy... You'll have to look at an online database, as mentioned above.

I didn't know about the Nook Exchange database, so thanks for sharing! Super helpful.

It seems like if there are multiple versions of the item under the picture on Nook Exchange they have separate variants. If it can be customized, it'll have arrows to the left/right to flip through the colors.
