So I saw a post on a random page of the resetting thread that was by Wondrus, and it inspired me. It goes like this:
I got the game on June 9th, 2013. I kept my first town for a week and a half. I got bored and annoyed by the inconvenient-ness of the layout, and restarted. Then I didn't stop. I'd keep towns for up to 3 days at most, then reset again. This went on for a couple MONTHS. Finally, I decided I should make a list of all my criteria/must-haves, and once I found a town that fit them all, I'd keep it. Then when I'd think about resetting again, I'd look back at my list and realize that it can't get any better and that resetting will be pointless and drastically wrong. So on August 30th, I found the town of Magenta. Had peaches, triangle grass, specific-river layout, cove for my house at the top right, east-beach, Re-tail above Plaza, a Teardrop-shaped Pond, and a Town Hall located near the center. It fit every single check box there was.♥ I've had this town for 14 days now (2 weeks). I would never have found this town if I gave up. So to those of you thinking about restarting, do it. What is there to lose? Kind members on TBT are willing to hold your valuables for you. Dream villagers already achieved? So what? Find new ones. You'll meet brand new friends in a new town. A new town means a new start. If you're forcing yourself to stay in your current town simply because 'it's been too long' and you've 'put so much work into it', you need to get out of that negative thought process. Because, personally, I'd rather start over and be in a town I ADORE and earn everything all over again, then settle with a town I simply can't stand just because it's been 2 months. It hasn't been a year, people. Not even half a year. It's better to restart now, then restart in 3 more months. It's worth it in the end. It really is. If you're thinking about restarting now, if you hate your layout, if you don't like your town, when will you like it? When will you stop thinking about restarting? Just rip off the band-aid and you'll be so grateful in the end that you did. Goodluck to you all.

So I made a list of the criteria I want in my new town. Am I crazy?

- Peaches as native fruit
- Triangle grass
- East (Left) beach
- Straight river
- Re-Tail, Town Hall, and Town Plaza close together
- One pond
- Cove/ Secluded place for house
- Blue Town Hall with Blue Train Station OR Green Train station with Yellow or Green Town Hall

I don't think this is crazy at all, thank you for sharing the post that inspired you to write down your criteria.. Maybe I will do the same, although I just spent a lot of time laying down my paths and such... I always thought about resetting until I found the perfect town, but it's so time consuming... But it just might be worth it. I'll have to think of my own criteria!

Oh wow! Thanks so much! Glad I could help, I guess!

Not at all crazy, that's a great way to look at it. Especially for people who are always resetting. I'm about to reset my second town and do this myself. I need to think of some criteria first though. So far all I care about is..

- Native fruit either peaches or cherries
- Circle grass
- A couple ponds
- Big beach
- Retail near the dock

I'm not sure really what else I would want.

I don't think it's crazy, but I'm not sure if "straight" rivers actually exist in this game.

My criteria would be

1-Circle grass
2-Apples OR Peaches
3-One "L" shaped Pond near retail
4- Perfect straight River lines (No cracks)
5-Aligned villager houses [2-4 In a line]
5-Any beach. Does not matter for me.
6-Plaza in the middle of map
7-Town hall Aligned with Retail
8-RV campground on the right

no, though I usually choose my map with little to no expectations. I was hoping for perfect cherries in my town but I can settle for apples. I have 8 rocks but they're not in the middle of a path. You can always work with it later, but it helps to have a cooperative map layout.

ugh i hate choosing maps, it's so annoying when u have everything just right except for like one thing. i don't even care about fruit, grass, villagers or colors of the train station and town hall, i just don't want rocks everywhere, more than one pond, a giant river, a weird beach or town hall/retail/plaza in super sucky places but it still takes ages to find a good map ;w;

For Astoria I wasn't incredibly picky--all I wanted was the Town Hall, Plaza, and Retail close together with a decent river. I also got this perfect nook in the river that worked great for my Mayor's home. I'm still happy with it. I just work around all the rocks and ponds.

For my second town, which will probably be spooky all year round, I will try to achieve the perfect layout. Straight river, orange fruit, nicely placed Town Hall and Plaza, etc. I want to be very picky with it simply because I wasn't so much with Astoria and I have a specific theme in mind this time! But I don't have a lot of my dreamies via amiibo, so I'm just using my second copy for cycling and stuff until I get them. :c

I just reset my town and my criteria was:

- Campground north of the river
- Retail, plaza, and town hall south of the river
- Not pears or orange for native fruit
- Beach ramp that's vertical by the dock, not horizontal
- Enough space to align villagers with no rocks in the way

...And I found it! Though I took like 4 hours to figure out where to put my house.

I wished I was as specific with what I want in a map as you guys. I just like maps where the river doesn't block off too much space tbh. Anything else I can compromise on. I just hate having a tiny section where you can't place anything but like flowers.

I'm not very picky about town maps.....just a few things:

-At least two starting villagers I like
-A curvy,meandering river
-No private beaches
-Re-Tail and Town Hall on the same side of the river but I'm flexible with that

Fruit,grass shape,ramps,rocks,ponds.....not a big deal to me.

I always make a criteria for my town maps before I reset, but I tend to only pick one of those criteria that I absolutely want no matter what, because getting everything is very unlikely lol...

Like recently I started a new town. My criteria:

- Apples
- Retail and Town Hall on one side of river; Plaza on other.
- Retail and Town Hall preferably on Northern side.
- South facing waterfall.
- Curved river that leaves decent space.

With this list the one thing I was absolutely positive I wouldn't be happy if I didn't get was the Apples. I ended up finding a map with the river and land space I wanted, and it had Town Hall and Retail on one side of the map with the Plaza on the other, but they were switched; plaza being to the north of the river.

I used to reset a lot but once I finally did something similar, make my own criteria, I finally figured out what would make me happiest with a map. I got super lucky this time around though. One look at the maps and I found it when I reset and I still love it. But there have been times when I've done it over the span of a few days and STILL ended up not liking something about it. With my second town I wasn't as picky, but since it's a Autumn farm town I wanted apples and a brown train station and I got that only a few times in. I think making a list of criteria is very important! You could have the best town, but if there's one little thing that keeps picking at you it eventually gets hard to resist resetting again haha.
