Can villagers take flowers?

I didn't think so, but one day Maelle had flowers in her room even though I sure as hell didn't give them to her, and a couple days later I found Elvis in her house saying he had brought her flowers, and had stolen them from her least favorite neighbor's yard. I don't think any flowers were missing from around town, though, so it might have just been a random weird convo (since ac seems to love those).
